Hi Everyone!

We are planning to bring home our first Boxer next month (flashy fawn male) and are having a LOT of trouble deciding on a name. I believe that the name should be strong and reflect the German origin of the breed, with maybe a Roman/Greek connection. I've also heard that dogs sometimes respond better to one- to two-syllable names, along with those that end in the long "e" sound. And, to top it all off, I need something easy for my 4 year-old to remember! Although most of these don't fit the category, here are some names we have come up with:

- Ace
- Apollo
- Angus
- Axel
- Blaze
- Bruno
- Caesar
- Ramses
- Remus

If anyone can think of any other names that may fit this criteria, please let me know.

Thanks so much for your help!

Peace
~ Coco

We just went through looking for a name for our second :) We decided on "Deimus" with the help of BW. Deimos was the son of Ares and translates to "terror". This is a really good site: http://pets.htmlplanet.com/male-dog-names.html

You can look by personality, physical attributes, language origin or whatever else. Also keep in mind that you want something unique, which we didn't do on our first boxer (Tyson). Everyone's dog is name Tyson, Apollo, or Rocky. I've also seen lots of Caesars and Ace's.

Sorry I'm not much help on specific names at the moment, I'm all doggy-named out after just deciding on our own after several weeks, but thought I could at least give you a good resource :)

Thanks, Lynnca! My son stumbled upon this site the other day, although I didn't realize that it was so extensive. I'll definitely check this out. I didn't realize how difficult this would be. My children all have Hebrew/biblical names, so now I'm thinking about going that route. I'll definitely let everyone know how it turns out!

If you are thinking biblical, the name that sounds strong to me from the list provided by the above link is Zuriel. Of course Rock is a popular name for "strong" dogs and the fact that Zuriel means "God is my rock" is an interesting way to make a connection to a popular name and suggest something about the family and the inner strength of the animal. It also sounds good.

Forgive me for being unoriginal (1st Apollo, then Rocky) however like EVERYONE ELSE that named their dogs these names we love the Rocky movies. In fact the next Boxer that we get, we will call him Clubber(as in Clubber Lang-Mr. T) We tossed several names around when we got Apollo, but at that point(pre-BW) I'd never heard anyone else name their dog that. We also had a boxer in between the boys, her name was Jelly Bean(she was the runt of her litter-she's at the bridge). I personally like Angus(AC/DC), but you'll know the right name when you see it. BTW, I didn't take offense to the unoriginal comment, but I know that my decision is just that, MINE.

Thanks for all of your great ideas. Zuriel is definitely a top pick! I also like Kedar, Cyrus, and Damek (the Slavic form of Adam). And, Billbgh, I've always loved the name Apollo. I actually thought about Clubber as well, but I was outvoted! :)

Love the name Apollo

And, Billbgh, I've always loved the name Apollo. I actually thought about Clubber as well, but I was outvoted! :)

Thanks guys, I appreciate that. There are always ways around being outvoted(I had two c-sections for my skin kids, that's how I got second dd's middle name:)) Good luck with whatever you choose, and let us know.

If you're thinking biblical, Moses comes to mind as a strong name. I've also heard dogs respond best to two syllable names.
