Emma just started limping on her right leg over the last couple of weeks. My wife and I have checked her leg for pain, swelling, and lumps. She has none of these. She hasn't fallen that we know of: she limps worse after she has been laying for awhile then the limping stops after she has moved around for awhile. We are puzzled at what it could be. If it gets worse I guess we will have to take her to the vet. We are considering giving her Pet Joint health Glucosamine tabs from Costco; maybe she has arthritis? Though she is only 2 1/2 years old. Any ideas? Thanks. Concern Emma's Pop

Is it her right hind leg or front leg? If it is the hind leg, it could be an ACL injury. My dog ruptured his ACL and would really limp on it when he first got up. It would sometimes seem to go away or get better as he moved around, but after about 2 weeks of this, he would limp most of the time. I'd have it checked out. If it is an ACL injury, they sooner they can get in and repair it, the better. I certainly hope it's not this, but I'd still have it checked out if I were you. Does she "toe tap"? That is when say she's eating or standing and she will barely touch her toes on the floor of the affected leg, putting her weight on the other 3 legs. That is a very strong indication of an ACL problem.

If it is her front leg, maybe she pulled a muscle or a tendon. I had the same thing with Roxy (I swear everything has happened to her!). She started limping out of the blue. I felt her leg and her foot and she had no pain response so I gave her massages. I called my mom, who is a nurse and has Shelties and does agility with them, if they had ever had something like that. She thought maybe it was a muscle or tendon. Well, she got better, but it took a while. Probably 2 to 4 weeks. I didn't walk her for a while because I didn't want to aggravate it and make the healing process longer. Then, when we got Buster, she started playing pretty hard and lo and behold it happened again. It was really bad when she first got up, but after she was up a while seemed better. After about 5 days to a week she stopped limping. I'm guessing the playing just aggravated whatever had happened to her before. I don't know if this is much help. Good luck with it anyway.
