Just Have to Boast a Little. . .

I can't help it. Maggie Mae was so incredible today I just have to boast a little on her.

We went to the Vet today for her second round of shots. She's not gone more than a block with me on leash before outside. It has been outside for business then back inside mostly for the past month. Today, she walked like a little pro all the way (8 blocks) to the Vet. We had to wait over an hour, and she sat next to Daddy the entire time, and did not move except to wag her little nubbie each time another animal came in and sat with their owners. She was awesome!

When it came time to see the Dr., she wiggled and giggled and even let Dr. take a stool sample without even flinching. She just wiggled and let the doctor examine her thoroughly without any problems at all. I was astounded. She actually didn't want to leave the Dr.'s office. I'm so proud of her!

And we walked all the way home too, just like she'd been doing it her whole life. Unbelieveable. No acting up, no misbehaving. She stopped (without command now) at every corner and sat and stayed and waited till Daddy said "OK" and then we run across the street. She is precious.

Plus she's now going down steps in the apartment building by herself (with Daddy and on lead). I'm so happy and so is my back! She weighed in at 20 pounds, averaging 2 pounds a week since I brought her home.

And today was breakthrough day. Just a while ago, daddy was on the computer (here reading about poor Biscuit being attacked) and she was asleep at my feet. My sister phone and we were talking when Maggie got up, went to the front door and sat down. She's never done that before. I got up and asked her if she had to "go outside?" and she got very excited. She accepted the leash and went racing downstairs to her piddle place at the curb in front of the house and did her business. I nearly cried I was so proud of her for letting Daddy know she had to go outside. This is a major breakthrough.

You can bet she sure gots lots of praise and a couple of treats too when we finished her business outside.

One problem. :( She is lethargic now, after the shots. I expected this. So when she finished her business, she got back on the sidewalk and sat down, then laid down. I figured it was the shots kicking in so I picked her up to carry her back into the house, not wanting her to have to walk up 3 flights of stairs after her shots and feeling so sleepy. But she yelped and snapped and tried to bite me when I picked her up. It must be where the shot was administered that is sore. At least, that's my assessment. I tried to hold her away from the shot site, but she still would have none of it. I talked soothingly to her and got her up to the front door of the building, but she insisted she be put down. I apologized for hurting her, over and over, and she wanted to walk up the stairs all by herself. She did (much more slowly than usual and stopping a couple of times), but she would NOT let me pick her up.

Has anyone else experienced this sort of behavior after your pup getting shots? Will she feel better and less sore in a day or two? Am I doing something wrong? Did I hurt her in any way? I sure didn't mean to. I thought I was helping her not making her use her shoulder where she got her shot. She had other ideas, I guess.

Thanks for any reassurances you might be able to give me.

Regards,

Dan and Maggie Mae

Yay for Maggie Mae! What a good girl! :D

Dan, I agree and think that for some reason she might be SUPER sensitive from her shots right now. She is probably associating being picked up with a acute sense of pain she probably felt the first time you tried to pick her up. You might want to call your vet just to check...

I am sure that she will be feeling fine in no time! :D

Thanks for your wonderful comments. Yes, I love her so very much. She's brought new light into my life, just when I needed it.

Just to follow up, after our yelping/biting incident, she came upstairs and went to sleep immediately. She slept for about 4 hours and then got up and let me pick her up and take her outside. No yelping, no biting. We came back in, she ate some and went back to sleep. After about 2 hours, she awoke and was her usual silly, playful, happy, loving self.

Thanks for your support. It sure is nice to know you guys are here when I get so paranoid about my little girl. Being a daddy sure is hard.

YAY!! what a smart girl you have. :)
Glad to hear she's feeling better from the shots. Rebelle usually feels horrible after her vaccinations but perks up again the next day. No big deal. Cherish the quiet time while you can LOL!!
