What is the deal with puppies jumping and barking at new people? My pup is driving me crazy with this but i love her so much it's hard to get mad at her. What do I do? Is spanking with a newspaper considered wrong or what?

For what it's worth - here's my opinion: Don't use the newspaper...it's outdated and there arre much better remedies for that problem! First, does you dog know how to sit on command? Teach that and reward with a treat. Whenever you give your pup a treat, make him sit FIRST. When this is down, ask a friend to come over and help you. Place a bag/bowl of treats outside the door and ask your pal to pick one up, & ring the bell. When you answer the door, make sure pup can't get out, but comes with you. If he jumps, shake him firmly by the scruff and use a low voice to say "no" very firmly. Praise him when he stops. Then, let your friend in and repeat. WHen pup stops jumping, have the friend show off the treat and tell pup to sit. Repeat several times, day after day. I think that pup will figure out that when someone comes over, he needs to sit. It takes time and consistency but is well worth it.

Try some Uncle Matty training videos - they are great!

Yeah, I don't think a spanking with a newspaper will have a very positive effect.

What you need to do is work on a good "sit" command.

IGNORE your dog when you come in the door. I know it's hard, but it isn't forever. You should go about your business ignoring your pup until he has calmed down. Once he has calmed down, get him in a sit position and pet and praise him. If he gets up and starts bouncing around again, put him in a sit or ignore him again. If you practice this enough, it will pay off. Just be diligent.

Good luck.

It's quite natural for puppies to want to jump of people, but you must discourage it. As the others have suggested you should teach your puppy to sit and stay. Don't allow any visitors to great your dog unless her butt is on the floor and she is behaving herself.

Goodluck,

I have always used the turn sideways and reject move when ours had their jumping problem. Then when they sit down and behave they get some attention, I learned that off of Animal Planet, I started them early and it works.

If you have a hard time controling your pup, by the methods mentioned above (sit), put a leash on your pup when someone comes to the door, and then make your pup sit.

Please do NOT use a rolled up newspaper, and hit your dog. You will teach your dog to be afraid of you.

I also recommend enrolling your puppy in obedience classes. This is very important for socialization and they will teach you the proper ways of training.
