Ok...I havent had a boxer puppy before and I want her to have a good food. I have always done rescue boxers.
I just started Chance on Nutro. Is this good? I looked at Canideo (SP) but I thought it a little to expensive for my budget. She seems to like whatever food I give her so now I just want to give the best I can afford.
I would appreciate some advice concerning this.
Thanks in advance.

Hi,

Nutro is not a great food at all, unfortunately. I am not sure what your budget is, but if you do a search here on quality kibbles, you will find a lot of great suggestions. Here are a few great kibbles in no particular order:

Wellness
Solid Gold
Flint River Ranch
Eagle Pack Holistic
Canidae
Innova
Chicken Soup

Good luck!

Check out the thread on the Costco Kirkland brand food, it's ingrediants are slightly better than Nutro and it's cheaper... Also look at Chicken Soup as well..

Nutro is ok, but you can do better... One way to compare is to take the weight of an adult dog and see how much Nutro recommends feeding him and how much say Candide or Wellness recommends feeding them... the better foods should recommed feeding less, which equals out eventally in price. Hope this helps...

Thank you. She is eating this food well so far and when she gets close to done with the bag I will get one of the foods you recommend. I will mix in and do it gradual.
When I was at the petstore I could not remember which of the foods had high ratings from the members here and I remembered NUTRO and Candide. This all makes sense the way you explain it.
By the way things are looking she doesnt seem like she is going to be fussy about any type of food. She just likes to eat...for which I am happy.
I feel like a first time pet owner but all my dogs have been grown ups so I am a new mom...

We used to have all 4 of ours on Nutro, but it seemed that their coats weren't quite as shiny and lustrous. They also went # 2 alot more, so I was constantly cleaning up the backyard. We switched to Chicken Soup and I couldn't be happier. Bownser & Dozer-both have food allergies,Dozer was the worst and everything has cleared up. It is a bit more expensive, but so worth it in the long run. Pooh is a notoriously picky eater and she loved it from the start.

I have used Nutro on our boxers and have not had a problem with it. Their coats are shiny and they look wonderful. We have a golden retriever that was no longer wanted by his owners. He looked awful, mats, skin issues, excessive shedding, etc. Today he is a new dog thanks to Nutro. I wouldn't use anything else. I have tried several of them, slowly introducing them only to have my dogs have issues with super colon blowout in the house or yard. So I have learned my lesson. I stick with what works and for me it is Nutro naturals.

While it is true that you have to find a food that works for you, at the same time you want it to be as nutritious as possible and devoid of all of the cheap fillers that aren't healthy for your dog.

When you look at labels, stay away from foods that have: Corn (they may call it corn meal or gluten), white rice or wheat (wheat flour).

These are cheap fillers that companies use, that have NO nutritional value for your dog. In addition, corn is hard (if not impossible) for dogs to digest. This can cause LOTS of problems with the dog including, vomiting, bad gas, loose stools, etc..

When I look at Nutro's dog food (from their website), I see:

Wheat Flour
Ground Whole Wheat
Corn Gluten Meal
Ground Rice
Rice Bran
Poultry Fat (you do not want any rendered fats)

Hope this helps!

Luka is on Chicken Soup and likes it. Sometimes I mix in some of their wet food, which looks pretty good- you can see whole pierces of vegies.
Although, I think he is getting a little bored... I see Canidae in our future. beericon

you might also want to note - there is a huge difference in the different lines of foods in each brand. My pups eat Nutro Natural Lamb & Rice. They love the foods! They also get The Nutro Natural Duck and Pasta (soft food) as a treat with their dinners. They think that is just heaven!!! I did go through several different foods to find one that the pups likes, and agreed with them well. They both have very healthy coats too.
