My boxer boy Cassius just turned 4 on march 6th and I was thinking about getting another boxer or maybe rescue a dog from the shelter for a playmate for him but some people tell me that its too late that Cassius would be jelouse and that I should have done it when he was younger what do you all think????

I think having 2 boxers is the best!

We got Eric when he was 9 months old & Ali was 14 months old.......no problem, but neither are dog aggressive at all.

The fact that Cassius is 4 probably has little to do with getting another dog. The real question should be how does he react to other dogs??

How does he react to other dogs when you take him for a walk?...... Do you have friends/family with other dogs that he socialises with?

If he is aggressive towards other dogs then it is maybe not going to work out. You may find getting a female will help, but there are no guarantees.

Good Luck, please let us know how it works out.

We got Baxter and Dusty when Lexi was 3. I don't think it's ever too late :) If Cassius is dominant than I suggest a submissive dog, if he's submissive than just about any dog will work! I think it's best to introduce them on neutral territory prior to adopting if that's possible. We had some squabbles, but they can usually work out their differences!

I WOULD SAY THAT A GIRL DOG WOULD WORK THE BEST. IT IS MAINLY INTRODUCING THEM ON NUETRAL GROUND. YOU MAY HAVE TO WORK WITH SEVERAL IN ORDER TO FIND ONE THAT IS COMPATIBLE. TWO WORKS FINE THEY ENTERTAIN EACH OTHER AND 3 IS A HOOT.

I rescued Mason when Leena was 5 months old. Mason is VERY dog aggressive, but he does great with Leena. Leena is the leader of the two, and she has been from day one. In the beginning, he did try to take over the top dog position, but realized there was no way she would give in. There was about 2 months that they weren't allowed together at all. I had to take them both to the vet with deep scrapes (no stitches). Now they are wonderful together, and no fights at all anymore. I guess to sum it up, if it doesn't work out in the beginning, it might turn into a happy ending like ours. Good luck

No problems here, just 2 very happy dogs

I recently got Lilu, Buc's 2 now. She turned 1 on the 9th of January. They've gotten along GREAT from the Get Go. He is an EXTREMELY submissive male. And she is a sweetheart. I think they've fallen in love...abolutely, positively...inseperable. And he's gained quite a bit of confidence having her around. They have to sleep touching eachother...it's so cute to see them all curled up. And i do agree about the neutral territory meeting also.

It all depends on the dogs involved.

We adopted Omar when Magnum was almost 3 1/2 years old, and because Magnum is so passive, I knew he would be fine with just about any dog we brought into our family - he wanted a brother so bad. We already knew Omar, so when we were given the opportunity to adopt him, his personality wasn't an issue.

They are the best of friends.

My mom's boxer is now pushing 7 years old and he has a sister who is 5ish (rescue). We brought over our puppies last weekend and the old man couldn't wait to get them out of there. I think he just doesn't have the patience for them.

Maybe you should consider adopting an older boxer (a little less active) instead of a puppy.

My Hook was...a little over 4 years old  when I brought Dayla home...

I got Day as a puppy...and to be honest...I think he would have prefered an older woman or an older man to live out his senior years with. Dayla gets on his nerves a lot...I often think she needs a playmate because Hook would much rather lay on the couch all day long :D

If I were you...I would look into rescuing an older dog. But...that's just my opinion after dealing with this first hand. Now I wish I had an older woman for Hook to hang around with and love on...and I wish I had a young strapping man for Day to play with...

But...it is never too late...and Hook loves his sister dearly...he would do anything for her....
