We were adopted by a roughly year old male boxer this weekend. (Official age pending his vet appointment early next week!) We've been dogless since we lost our Aussie a few months ago. Our Aussie had no desire to be an inside dog (in fact, he hated it) so our 2 cats mostly stayed inside and we had peace in the family!

"Puppy", for lack of an official name, has obviously been an inside dog and acted like he wanted inside last night. He's been wandering in our neighborhood for the better part of 2 weeks and has a pretty rough case of fleas. We flea sprayed him last night, but he wanted no part of a bath. We didn't want to force the issue, but he's getting one in the next couple of days. Once the flea issue is solved, we have to tackle the cat issue.

What is the best way to introduce the 3 of them? "Puppy" has been outside with both of them (when he first wandered up) and didn't offer to bark at or chase them so I'm taking that as a great first sign. He's extremely docile and is super friendly -- but we have no idea of his history and want the first experiences to be positive ones.

Note: A neighbor and I have tried to find his family, but no one has answered the ad in the newspaper, the online ad with our local radio station, or the ad at both vets' offices. Even though we weren't planning on adding a dog to our family right now, it was never an option to take him to the local shelter.

If "Puppy" hasnt offered to be aggressive to the cats so far, they'll probably get along fine. Either the cats will make friends with him, or they'll stay away somewhere high up.

Tonight did not go well at all. The dog HATES cats. I was hoping he would have a playful/interested attitude, but he is aggressive with them. Not good. Not quite sure where to go from here. If he's aggressive with them now, will that behavior ever change or is it simply what it is?

"Puppy" may just need time. Cornelius is not especially fond of cats but Kit Kat has been able to walk past him without him giving chase (I originally thought he wanted to EAT her). And even yesterday when we came in from our walk, she was on the arm of the chair and they came nose-to-nose with no incident. appicon It's been almost 2 years since Kit Kat came to live with us.

I think that if you just give it a little time all will work out. If "Puppy" had been wandering around neighborhood for that long, he is probably a little stressed out. Just a little time and love is probably all he needs. Good luck :)
