I just gave my dog a chicken wing for the first time and he barely chewed it and just about swallowed it whole. Is that bad? Also I want to know how much chicken gizzards and hearts it's okay to feed. I'm going to start giving him some raw food as treats.

I fed my first wing last night too and pretty much the same thing happened. I heard a little crunching and then it was gone! I posted to another group and the people there said that this is how dogs eat chicken wings! They don't chew everything 20 times like people do. It was pretty scary to watch though. I guess it was ok though because he didn't choke and he's been fine since.

Are you going to feed your dog kibble too, or are you going to BARF all the way? I am still looking up info. on it.

It is better if you can convince him to chew his food. If he doesn't, it's not the end of the world, but if he can't digest it then he is likely to throw his food back up and have to re-eat it.

Try holding onto the other end of the wing for a while till he learns to chew ;)

When I first started feeding Markus raw, I would hold on to his chicken so that he had to chew. :)

well, I gave Harley one chicken wing and a very tiny marrow bone today and he is broken out with little red bumps everywhere already. Something tells me the raw diet is not going to work for him.

Where are these bumps? What do they look like? Luke has what looks like acne under his chin. We started feeding raw last week and the bumps were bleeding tonite. Wonder if its related?

Detox ;) Do a search. Not all dogs go through a detox period when they're taken off kibble, but plenty do, and it sounds like the case for your dog.

Allergy is another possibility - and is one reason it is recommended that you start raw feeding with *one* food at a time.

Totallyhip: your dog could also be experiencing detox, or he could actually have acne. It's not uncommon.

Yes, we are planning to do all raw and no kibble. Initially I was thinking of doing half/half but then as I started to get into it more I changed my mind. So far he's had chicken wings, spinach/carrot/apple mix, a small amount of brown rice (just to make the transition from kibble - we will not feed grains normally), and eggs, and he's done just fine with that. Breakfast today was tuna and veggie mix, so we'll see how he does with that.

harley has acne from allergys already, these are tiny little red bumps (like little zits) all over his chest, stomach, and legs. I also took him out to go to the bathroom this morning and he looked like he wanted to poop, but couldn't.
