Our pups are 6 days old today. They had their tails docked on Friday (day 3) and today, 2 of the tails look raw and "oozy". Is this normal? Can we put any antiseptic ointment on them or should we just take them back to the vets?

The same thing happened with my pups, the vet said that boxers are popular for licking there stiches off because they are aggressive cleaners. I had to give them clavamox 2x daily for 10 days and it cleared up after 3 days. I would bring them to the vet to make sure they don't get infected.

    Good luck

I have had this happen also. It usually is a bitch that is overly picky on cleaning her babies. I don't like to put puppies on antibiotics. I use hydrogen peroxide twice daily and apply any ointment like furacin, panalog or neosporin after. A few days and everything is fine. The area will fill in.

If you do put your pups on antibiotics be sure to give them some of the good bacteria like probiotic or lactobacillus so they are able to digest their food and not get diarrhea.

    :)

Thanks you guys for your advice! That's exactly what happened. We visited the vets today, Rudi had licked open 2 of the tail docks. So I'll be rinsing and neosporing those tails for a little while, but I'm glad to hear that they'll fill in and be ok. I always fear having those tails that you see the "nub skin".
    Thanks again.

    Infected Tail

I bought a pup and she had her tail docked at 8 wks (surgery and anesthesia). The pup licked off her stitches off and you can now actually see her tail cartilage (bone). The vet wants to wait and see if it will heal on its own. I've been cleaning it w/ hydrogen peroxide and he had prescribed her animax. Everytime the pup gets excited, she wiggles her tail and it begins to bleed again. Any suggestions, recommendations??

My pups parents belonged to my friend. So I was always there ( i got the tail from mine from the vet saving it kinda like baby ambilical cord.) My pup wasnt over cleaned he ate to much that pulled the skin tight. The vet told us to cut him back on the tit till he healed up he was fine in a week mom kept tail clean vet said didnt need to give him nothing. (maybe right or wrong thats just my case.)
