I took Sammie to the vet for her shots today. We've recently discovered that she's very afraid of storms. She paces, runs around the house, and pants really weird. I asked the vet to give me something to relax her for next time the weather gets bad. The tried to give me ACE! I said "No, I've read that's bad for Boxers...I'd prefer something else." The tech didn't know what I was talking about. The vet was really nice and said that ACE does cause problems in dogs prone to seizures. He gave me Valium.

I go to the best vet in town. I am so shocked that they give ACE to Boxers.

Yeah, that is scary. You could print out the Ace info for him from BW. I know when I had that talk with my vet (he doesn't use it, but we were talking about it and the reading I had done here) he said to me that if there is ever anything I think he would like to read to please bring it in. He told me that he is sure there are things out there that he may not know and that he is always interested in reading studies and things he may not have seen.

If you do a search, you will find many alternatives to drugs. Using Valium to calm is a last resort for extreme fear, meaning fear that cannot be controlled by any other means.

The vet prescribing ACE or any drug before you have tried other methods would make me wonder about this vet

I was going to suggest Rescue Remedy as well. Jack is afraid of t-storms and fireworks. I give him 2 droppers (I know they say 3 drops but try dropping three drops in a trembling boxers mouth!) and it kicks in about 15-20 minutes later. I have seen him go from panting, drooling and shaking to completely calm chewing a bone in 20 minutes. It does not make him drowsy, just calms him down.

Thank goodness you know about ACE! Imagine how may people out there who really don't know and that trust their vets; and don't have a great informative source like this one to guide them in the right way! ;) It's scary, isn't it???? Thanks for speaking up! Maybe you made the difference in preventing your vet from prescribing ACE to future boxers!
