Tomorrow morning I am driving from CT to ME to pick up Joseph - a gorgeous 4 yr. old fawn male with docked ears and tail who is deaf. I am adopting him through Second Chance Boxer Rescue (What a great organization!) He was previously owned by a show dog breeder and has been shown, so he knows some hand signals. We just don't know which hand signals he knows. This is going to be a challenge I know, but am willing to work with him. Does anyone out there have any experience traning a deaf dog? I'd appreciate any tips, help, etc.

Jean, I don't have any tips for working with a deaf dog, but I did want to say, "GOOD FOR YOU"!

I keep an eye on Second Chance's available dogs, even though my husband refuses to get another dog, and Joseph is GORGEOUS. He sounds like a very sweet, well-mannered dog, despite his deafness. Best wishes and good luck. Keep us posted.

Good for you adopting a dog in need! I have no tips on training a deaf dog, but I have heard that there is a vibrating collar that you can get which may aide in training.

Good luck and let me know how everything works out, we would love to adopt a special needs dog in the future.

Congratulations! I'm sure you will be very happy with Joseph.
Sorry, I don't know anything about training deaf dogs either.

I was surprised to read that he's fawn. You always hear about deafness in whites (don't know if there is actually any validity to that though).

Good luck, and keep us posted.

Yeah!! I saw Joseph on the SecondChance Boxer Rescue and he is beautiful. You are really great person to give him a home with a family who will love him like he deserves.

Good for you!! I haven't trained any deaf dogs but I do teach all mineand signals along with the verbal commands so it's probably quite similar. Repetion is the key. Go ahead and speak the command, give the signal and then show the dog what you want him to do. Praise, praise, praise and reward! Always speak to you dog as if he hears, he will pick up on your facial expression quite well....you might want to really exagerate happy and not pleased to emphasise your point when needed. I think you'll find that it will all work out. Also, if you want to get his attention, flip a light off and on and then get him to come to you. This may work in replacing calling his name. Of course, he may show up when you don't want him if you change the lights, but big deal...give him some extra lovin' then!

Good luck to you both!

Oh Jean, he's gorgeous! I saw him on the SCBR site. He sounds great. You might want to do a search about deaf dogs, I believe their is quite a bit of info.

Hurray for Jean and Joseph!!

Jean,
I'm sure you will do great with Joseph..He is a wonderful boy. I drove to Ohio to get him and his brother Elijah for our rescue. He was the sweetest thing going and a dream on the leash which is hard to find with alot of boxers. As everyone has said lots of lovin and patience, patience, patience!
The only training I have heard of is the light trick also...you may want to contact Lynn she has done training with deaf dogs and had Joseph for a while! If you need her email just email me and I'll send it to you!
Good Luck!
