Since moving out here, people have been talking about the bears. Well I finally saw one this morning! Now I am no expert on bears, but this one looked young. (smaller than ones I have seen at the zoo.) I think it was a black bear, and it was so pretty!! It walked up our driveway, sniffed the garage door, and moved on to the side of the house. I tried to get a picture but it was already gone. I was so excited, I was shaking!
Does anyone else encounter large wildlife where they live? I would love to hear some stories. We also have elk, and we have been hearing the bulls bugle to each other in the mornings and early evenings. It's so cool out here!

What a place - sounds great.

About all I have seen is a few small deer, foxes and badgers around here. But we make a hullabaloo when we see them. Wonder what we would be like if we say a bear or elk on the drive, no chance sadly.

They are seriously talking about re-introducing the european wolf into Scotland to curb the red deer who are doing quite a lot of damage as their numbers are pretty much unchecked.

That would be fantastic and I'd be booking holidays up there to get a glimpse if possible first chance.

I live in Washington and we also have deer, elk, coyotes & bear. A neighbor said he saw a black bear nearby our house- but I have yet to see one and I spend a lot of time in the woods with my dogs. I have seen A LOT of coyotes coming out of the woods but luckily not when I'm back there with my dogs.

In Alabama, Elvis chased a wild turkey, armadillos, and a small wild boar - which I was very worried about because they can be very aggressive. I always worry that we may run into something that may turn ugly and for that reason I carry protection with me when I'm back in the woods. I absolutely love seeing the wildlife- nature is so amazing. I've always wanted to see a bear in nature - I'll keep looking.

Oh yes! We have bears out here in PA as well! ;) They are very beautiful aren't they (if they're at a distance! ;) ) I'll never forget the one day... I was cooking in the kitchen and had the front door open in the family room (screen door was on). I walked to the family room and about tossed my lunch in the air! There was a bear on the front porch looking in at Sam (just sitting there)! It was quite odd because Sam didn't make a peep! Although, I'd probably be terrified and speechless as well! ;) I prefer to see them at a distance! But they are quite a sight!

Hi, I live in Idaho and we occasionally get bears in our neighborhood, although I have never seen one. I recommend be careful, keep the trash covered and in your garage; leave nothing for the bears to explore, and keep pets including cats inside at night. Bears are dangerous, even black bears and when one is sighted, our neighborhood association sends an e-mail out., Cool sighting though.

I love bears. Unfortunately, here in the suburbs of the New Orleans area, we do not have them. All three of our trucks and our Corvette have "Save the Louisiana Black Bear" license plates. They are so cute with a bear and it's pawprints on them. :)

Thanks for the warnings Scrappysmom!! Our trashcans have to be "bear proof", or we get fined by the city. We keep our kitties indoors 24/7, so we don't have to worry about the foxes eating them. We also never leave our garage open, as we have been told some stories!!
Seeing the bear was really cool, but I am going to keep my distance when possible. It was hard to not run outside with the camera, but I know better than that! We had a late freeze that nipped all the buds, and the poor bears are having a hard time finding food out in nature. Now is when they go into eating mode, getting ready for winter hibernation. They are getting desperate for anything to eat that will bulk them up for the long sleep.
I hope next year is better for them. A lot of bears have been euthanized because people don't care to bear proof the trash, or just outright feed them. They get three strikes, and if it comes back, it is a goner. :(
That makes me sad, they are beautiful animals, and we are the ones invading their territory! I just felt so priviledged it chose to visit my house... :)

That sounds so cool! My mom had one go through her yard and up the bank and across the highway about 5 years ago. Only one she has ever seen though. I've seen foxes, coyotes, and deer galore. We have elk here in East KY, but I have never seen them. I love the nature and her wildlife. A couple of my biggest dreams is to go to Alaska on a cruise or go to Montana see the Big Sky country.
Enjoy!
