I was recently diagnosed with grave's disease, which is a thyroid problem. Here is some info to help you better understand everything. (no i do not have bulging eyes, and i am taking 6-11 pills a day,
http://onhealth.com/conditions/resource/conditions/item,709.asp My thyroid is very overactive, which means i cant keep the weight on. I went to an endrochonlogist(sp) and i will be on medication for the rest of of my life, since i have to go with the dr.'s orders, he told me that i need to watch my diet. He wants me on a low fat, calorie, and sodium diet. I also have a blood pressure problem. (either to high or to low).

My question is, can someone give me a REALLY GOOD example of a diet plan? I cant seem to find one.

My sister had a hyper active thyroid (I think that is how they described it)and high blood pressure, she also had the bludging eyes, which have corected themselves since - sounds like maybe the same thing??? She has been taking medication for about 20 years now and has had no problems. I don't think she went on any particular diet but did start to eat healthier.
Sorry I don't have any diet plans for you but I wish you all the best in finding one and hope that the medications work for you as well as they have for my sister.

Melanie, I am so sorry to hear about the Grave's disease. I know when you get a diagnosis like that it can be shocking and scarry. I also have a thyroid disease, hypoactive thyroid-Hishimoto's disease(sp). My body has produced anti-bodies against my own thyroid and stopped it from producing thyroid hormone. I was diagnosed at 22. Now, eight years later, it really does not seem like a big deal, I take my medicine and check my levels every 6 months. However, initially it was shocking to realize I would have to take that medicine the rest of my life. Although I have been taking medicine daily since I was three for asthma. I take up to 10 medications a day. I think it is good that you are researching your disease, the more knowledge you have about something, the more comfortable you are with it. Good luck and I am sorry I can not help you with the diet. But I am here for support. :)

Robyn, thank-you for the support. I am still bummed out about taking medication for the rest of my life, (considering that i am only 19) but I guess i have to deal with it.

My husband has been great about this, and he is my living reminder to take my medicane (he is constantly asking if i took it :D) Which is great!

Melanie, I am sorry to hear about your diagnosis. Did you have any idea or was it something that just came about? I wish I could give you an idea about a healthy diet to keep weight on, as my diets are to kep weight off. I do have a friend who is a nutritionist and I will ask her if she has any suggestions. I may not see her for awhile, so I will try my best to remember to ask when I do see her.

Asy, The dr's are not sure what causes Grave's disease, my dr said that it "could be heridarty" or a major stressful life event could cause it. Either way they are not sure.

i got concerened in June when i didn;t have my red friend for 4 months and i went to the obgyn, he did blood work on me, and i should have kept my mouth shut. WHAT WOMEN WOULD KILL TO NOT HAVE THEIR RED FRIEND :D

But serisiouly i knew that something was wrong, and i am glad that i went to the doctor. :D Hopefully in 2 years time i can have a skin kid and maybe another fur baby.

Melanie, I don't have any advice to offer because I do not have any knowledge of grave's disease, but I too would like to offer my support. You have such a wonderful upbeat attitude! My family has recently dealt with COMPLETE kidney failure of unknown cause (my completely healthy 19 year old cousin that was in college). A few months ago his brother donated one of his kidneys to him. So far, his body has accepted this new kidney and he hasn't had to have ANY dialysis since the operation :D :D :D. He does have to take about 26 pills a day but he is a trooper just like you!! :D

Keep up the smiles, good thoughts and laughter! :D

I send you all of my best wishes!

Melanie,
I am sorry to hear about your problem. Eventually you will find that taking medicines everyday will not be a big deal. It will soon become a routine. just like taking your vitamin pills. It was sensible of you to go to the doctor. Wishing you all the best..take care

Melanie,
I'm sorry to hear about your hardship. It'll be ok girl! everything will be fine :) I know what it's like to be told you're sick. It's scary!! But you'll be ok :) I've got a good feeling about it.

I agree with catcompany, taking the meds every day will become a routine, not a chore.
I've had to take meds every day since I was 18 for rheumatoid arthritis. No big deal now.
Check into naturopathic medicine too. works great for me

best wishes !!
