How old does a puppy have to be in order to tell if it has the standard look for showing? Also I see many show dogs with alot of whit markings and I know that more than a third is not acceptable but my dog has just a bit on his chest which is uniform and then thinly runs up to his muzzle. He also has a speck on one foot, but other than that he is all brindle. Can too little be bad?

A little white is just fine :) Experienced people sort of get a 'feel' for how a puppy will look at around to 6 - 8 weeks of age. In saying that, you just never know at all what will happen as they grow, and some puppies go through very ugly phases :D Amy was a very ugly duckling indeed for a few months LOL. From around 12 months or perhaps a bit younger you will have a good idea of how he compares to the standard. If you are interested in this I'm sure you would have a great time at conformation shows - you will be able to see lots of Boxers and talk to their breeders / owners. It may be a good idea to contact your closest Boxer club too as the members will be very helpful if you are interested in getting involved.

Some people prefer 'flashy' dogs for the showring, but if you have a plainer dog who conforms to the standard there is no reason for you not to do well. You may like to read these articles:

I also looked into conformation a bit and most of what I've read says at about 6-8 months you should be able to tell if the Boxer is show quality or not.
