We took in an abandoned 6 year old cat about 4 months ago. He is so sweet and loves everyone except our new addition to the family, our 7 week old male boxer Tyson. The first night was horrible! The cat almost crawled up my boyfriends leg to attack Tyson. It scared me so much I am hesitent to socialize them more but I know that is being completly unproductive. Does anyone have any advice or has anyone been through this? Thanks so much

Do some research on the internet and look for sites that can help. I would ask is the dog doing anything to the kitty?? Does the kitty have a safe place to eat and a box to use that it out of reach from the dog?? Also 7 weeks is very young for a boxer and I'm certain he is trying to make friends with the cat and the cat isn't ready for it.

You could contact your local Humane Society for advice and hopefully you will get some good information here too. They have the tips for the kitty claws also which would help keep the puppy from getting injured.

be patient!

I brought our puppy home at seven weeks to meet my two cats. I knew that if they were to get along at all, they would at least need to meet when they were close to the same size. The first few weeks was difficult, so be prepared for some incidences. The only real worry is the cat damaging tysons eyes. Any other scratch will teach tyson much needed respect for your cat.
At around 9-10 wks your pup will be at least the same size if not bigger than your cat, and starting at this point, I promise the cat will get what's coming to him. :) Just kidding.
Seriously, for a few weeks you will have to fully supervise their meetings. Be sure you continue to give your cat as much, if not more attention as before. Who knows, maybe he was abandoned the first time because a new addition came into the family? You never know. BE PATIENT! You will only be scared for your puppy for a few more weeks, then you will be more worried of the pup aggravating the cat too much, or stepping on him:)
Really, though this problem will work itself out. Now when mine play too rough, all three of them go into time out together:) pretty funny.
My ruckus is now 10 months, and when the cats arent being chased by him, they are snuggled up for a nap with their big brother. Makes for some very cute snapshots!
Good luck and take heart! Its worth it.

I have a 4 months old Boxer and two 12 year old cats.
At the beginning cats were trying to tear the dog apart. But now one cat lives upstairs where no animals allowed under normal conditions.
We just feel sorry for that cat so we let him do that.
The other cat is 28lb-bulldog-looking-beast is able to protect himself from the dog , or from anybody in that matter. So no problem there.

My question is how do i make the "upstairs" cat to get along with a dog ?
Dog's always chaising the poor kitty.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks so much!!!

Thank you guys for all your advice. My cat is learning to tollerate our little Tyson and they can hang out in the same room together now. Unsupervised is a whole different story but in time I'm pretty confident it will work out. Thanks again........Katrina and Tyson (8 week white male)
