Gun - my 26 yr old gelding had had diarrhea on and off about 1 mnth now. We are on the 3 day of the 3rd go around. Vet did blood work and nothing is abnormal - liver ok - white cell count good - enzymes normal. Anyone ever had this?

Could be due to his older age and with tooth wear. Sometimes they can't properly chew up their food and it gives them tummy trouble because older insides don't work quite as well as they used to. What are you feeding him and is he getting any medication or different feed at these times that might precipitate the onset of the diarrhea each time? Also keeping Desitin or Vaseline on him can help with diarrhea scald if that becomes a problem. He may need more fiber in his diet in the form of beet pulp or perhaps hay cubes soaked in a little water (if he has any kind of hard time chewing) if he's mostly on hay and isn't able to chew it as well as he used to. Hard to know without knowing his regular scheudle and anything that might be different.

Hi Vela

Poor G has had lots of dental work and starting to lose teeth. We give him equine senior and rolled oats - but because of chronic laminitis we havent gone strickly to senior feeds. We are going to try beet pulp also - just soak out the molasses. I was afraid that dehydration would be a problem with beet pulp. But if we soak it, I guess it will help.
He gets 4-6 flake of hay daily - 4 to start 6 if he "cleans his plate". Because of his teeth he is barely maintaining weight thats why we are free with xtra hay.
Gun spent several yrs on bute - but it has been along time (knock wood) since he needed it - but he takes thyro-l twice daily. I am giving probiotics currently - he really hates when we add the electrolytes.

He is drinking ok and no loss of appetite!

Also, we're in California, and I noticed my horse gets the runs when the alfalfa hay he eats gets really green. Too much rich food or a change in the quality of hay (which varies load to load) also can cause it. I give him daily electrolytes which keeps him drinking water until his system rights itself.

Yes I am trying the electrolytes and probiotics. He seems well - but I am torn abut cutting grain and just going hay because he does have old man teeth.
It still seems diarrhea is a mystery. I have the vets ok to worm him again so will do that tomorrow.

Well with his age you can use hay cubes soaked in water so they aren't so hard to chew, which will help him keep the weight on as well as the free feed stem hay. With his laminitis it makes it a little tricker with the grain. If he's getting his oats all the time then I doubt that has anything to do with it as he would always have the diarrhea. With winter coming on prob good to keep him on some grain as long as he isn't getting too much. Hope he gets to feeling better soon.
