So, if you havent read already, I am engaged! We are trying to decide where to go on our honeymoon. We cant afford anything really expensive, but we definitely want to go somewhere "tropical" meaning basically, a beach :) My dream would be to go to Hawaii, but that is way out of our price range, the airfare alone would be our budget limit. So, does anyone have any ideas for cheap honeymoon destinations or where I could find some good package deals? Everyone says Jaimaca, but I have heard it is pretty scary if you go off the resort area. Anyone been to Key West?

My husband and I went to St. Augustine, Florida for our honeymoon and we absolutely loved it. The beaches are wonderful. We went sailing, saw dolphins, ate at some nice restaurants, had a romantic suite overlooking the Marina, and did some tourist-type stuff...Fountain of Youth, Alligator Farm...It's a really neat place, with lots of history (oldest city in USA) and fun things to do. And the beaches are great.

And it wasn't nearly as expensive as travelling to more "exotic" locations.

I know alot of people who have been to Key West, FL. and loved it. There are many different "islands" that are not very far from each other. (when driving)

If you like to snorkle, deep sea fishing or just lounging by the beach and pool...it's for you. If you stay at a hotel, they will normally tell you the "hot spots" best places to eat and shop.

I live in Central Florida, which is maybe a 7 hour drive from Key West and have thought about going plenty of times.

Do you have an idea when you'll be getting married? I only ask...because you do not want to come to Florida during the summertime.

Hopefully someone else has some advice for you...good luck!!!

We stayed at a beautiful Bed and Breakfast and we will go back about one a year to the same place. Actually got my parents hooked on it too.
Like punchinella said : beautiful, peaceful beach!!! Lots of thing for you to do: See the Lighthouse, ride on a horse and buggy ride in the evenings, "ripley's belive it or not", an historic castle, youth fountain and all of thier resturants are amazing and inexpensive. You can use biceycles and ride around the town, stop and enjoy the manatees and dolphins playing.

Our B&B was right across the street from the marina, just feets so we sat on the porch ate a beautiful breakfast and watched the dolphins. The horses are all lined up there too!! We also sat on the porch...drank some wine or beer and watched the sun go down. I love this place and it's not overcrowded.

We stayed at: http://www.casablancainn.com/packspec.html and the people were incredibly friendly!!

What was really nice....when I first called this place, I asked tons of questions and she told me her favorite room.

Yeah, that is the problem, we are thinking late August or early September.

ewwwww.... I was not thinking at all when I got married and it was on August 17th. August is the hottest and most humid month of the year in Florida.

If you do plan to come to Florida during that time....a full warning!!!! I don't even like going to the beach in August, especially if there's no breeze. Yesterday it was still high 85 here

But, I'm sure outside heat will be tha last thing on your mind on your honeymoon

August 17 is my wedding anniversary too! We were married 11 years this year. We were married in VT and never had a honeymoon, but I always see things in the newspaper for cheap vacations to the Dominican, Mexico, or the Bahamas. Congratulations!!

We got married in July of 06. We decided to go to a Sandals Resort since they have a hurricane policy. That could be very important for a summer / early fall honeymoon!! We decided on Sandal's Dunns River in Jamaica. It was absolutely amazing!

I definitely wouldn't want to leave the resort (except on group trips) but there wasn't any need to. Sandals has a lounge in the airport and they provide transportation to and from the resorts so there's no need to try to find your way around un-escorted. Even on the excursions (horseback riding, Dunn's River Falls, etc.) you're with a group of other people from the resort.

Good luck on whatever you decide!!!

I have clients that love Key West, plus my ex bil's family lives there, I hear that it is awesome. I also have clients that love Sandals resorts and swear that is the way to go. Try www.travelocity.com, you can usually get awesome rates, or www.hotwire.com is the site we always use. Research the hotels in the area before you committ to buy, that way you have a general idea where you might stay, also, booking so far in advance, the prices are even better. We stayed at a 4star hotel this summer for 4 nights and it was a little over $300. Congrats and good luck!

That's where we went on our honeymoon!!!!!

How neat! We were there in May 2003. I wish I could remember the name of the place we stayed at. If I remember, I'll look in my wedding scrapbook tonight so I can post it.

Our five year anniversary is this next May ('08). I'd love to go back and stay in the same place. We went to Cape Canaveral in '04, and really enjoyed it. (noticed you live there)
The beaches on the East Coast are so different from the ones we normally go to around here (Gulf of Mexico). We noticed you could actually drive onto the beach (sand is harder packed) and of course the waves were much bigger. We loved it.
