I have a 3 year old male boxer. Im pretty sure he has hip dysplasia. My vet has given me some chewable treats that is suppose to help the joints but he was on them for almost 3 months and they didnt seem to help that much. Is there anything that you guys have found that helps?? Anything natural?? He's also is epileptic and is on 4 1/2 pills of phenobarbital and potassium bromide. I am tired of him being on so many meds. i want something natural for the dysplasia. He has a very hard time getting up sometimes and when he runs his legs keep going and he falls its like he has no control over his hips. If you guys know of any good websites where i can go and ask people what worked for them that would be great!

Have you had x-rays done to confirm that this is the problem. If so, how bad is it? Does it effect both sides? Is it something that can be managed by meds or will it require surgery? These are just some questions to think about. I am afraid that I cannot help much with the natural treatment for hip problems. The only help I can give is to let you know what I have been through. When I adopted Emma at 1 year old she had bad hips on both sides. I spent about 3-4 months getting her healthy enough to have surgery. For her surgery was no option; her femoral head was rubbing against her hip socket every time she moved. She has a very shallow socket on both sides of her hips that will not hold her femoral head the way it's supposed to. I couldn't have her be in pain every day just from walking. She had an FHO on her left hip, which was the one that was worse. She recovered nicely. We recently had a spell of cold weather and she began limping a little. I gave her a few days of pain meds and the limping stopped. Emma is very hard to pill and won't take Glucosamine supplements or anything like that and I didn't want to have to force a pill down her throat every day. Just today I have started her on Adequan injections. I am giving her an injection IM (in the muscle) twice weekly for 3 weeks and then we will see how often she needs it after that. It is supposed to be a little better than the oral supplements, and for me and Emma the injections are easier than the oral meds. I took another x-ray of her hips just a few days ago and her right side has deteriorated substantially in just a little over a year. I know that eventually she will need surgery on her other side, but I would like to hold off until it is necessary, as it is very hard to watch the pain she goes through with the surgery and recovery. If you do a search on Boxerworld for hip dysplasia you will come up with lots of results and stories of others who have been through the same thing and can offer advice of what helped them. Good luck to both of you.

Other diseases sometimes mimick hip dysplasia. Have you had an x-ray to confirm the problem?
