Hello everyone. My name is Jean and my husband is Alan. I was so happy to find a web page on Boxers and what a web site it is. I never imagined it would be so big and informative. We are the proud owners of a fawn male 7 year old boxer. His name is Buddy and he is the first Boxer we have had. He has brought us such joy over the past seven years and we are definatly true Boxer fans. The reason I looked for a web site on Boxers is because Buddy has developed grand mal seizures this year and I was looking for some information seizures. After checking out the forum I realize that we are not alone in dealing with epileptic dogs. It just seems this past year has been a downhill year for Buddy and I am at the vet with him usually once a month sometimes every two weeks.
I must say that owning a Boxer is truly a memorable experience. I sometimes wondered if he would ever grow up. But through love and patience we got through all of his terrible two antics and the teen type years. I have never owned a dog before that has been so devoted to us. I must say that the one thing that really attracts me to this breed is their intelligence. It sure doesn't take them long to learn even the bad stuff.
I am looking forward to talking to all of you out there. If anyone has any information on seizures in dogs could you please pass it on to me. Buddy is presently on 150 mg. of phenobarb daily and has been seizure free for two weeks. Considering the rest of the summer 2 weeks is excellent for him. Talk to you later. Have a good day eh!

Hi Jean! Welcome to the forum. :D I am so sorry to hear about Buddy :( . My last boxer, Mugzy, who passed away 2 years ago this month, had severe epilepsy all of his life. Unfortunately, I have a lot of experience with seizures and different meds. Please email me personally, I will share what I can to help you. Also, if you like, check out the site in my signature, it has some pics of Mugzy and our current baby, Cooper. mnrbedsaul@aol.com

Hello Jean, welcome. Where abouts in Canada are you? There are a few of us in B.C. You mention about the terrible two's, I don't think the Boxer ever grows out of being a puppy at heart, which is one of the reasons we keep to them. Sergeant is our third Boxer, and we wouldn't have any other. I know that you will get some very good advise from this board for Buddy, and I hope that you will be together for a few years yet. Did you get him as a puppy? I will be thinking of him and hope to hear soon how he is progressing. Good luck.

Hello Helene. It was nice to hear from you. I come from Ontario Canada, so I guess we are quite a few hundreds of miles apart. Yes we got Buddy as a puppy. He was 8 weeks old when we got him. I believe he was around three weeks old when we picked him out. Their were five in the litter and he was the only male. Only Buddy and his sister Roxy are still alive. The other three died of cancer when they were around 2 and 3. His mother died when she was 8 of a heart attack and his dad we lost contact with. Fortunatly for us very close friends of ours are the owners of his sister, so Buddy and her see each other regularly. Buddy is doing okay right now. As I stated he has been seizure free for 2 weeks. He had a burst of energy this morning and leaped up the outside stairs racing me to the door. Needless to say he is limping now. Seems to have sprained his front leg. He still thinks he should run around outside even though he is limping. They just don't stop do they. How is the weather in BC today. It is very humid here and 26 degrees cel. Have a nice day and thanks for keeping Buddy in your thoughts.

Hi Jean

Welcome to the board. Sorry to hear about Buddy's seizures. Markus has an occasion seizure, but they are infrequent and not very severe so we don't give him any medication for it. I have heard of Phenobarb being used for seizures. I think is is the most comman drug used and is quite good at keeping the seizures under control.

Hello Jean & Buddy :)

I too have a recently had to put my girl Greta on Phenobarb for siezures. She takes 60 mg 2x's a day and has only had 1 small siezure since starting her Meds about 5 weeks ago.

Greta is 11 1/2 years old and they are not sure what brought on the siezures but they suspect some type of cancer :(
If your guy has enough energy to run up a set of steps he's doing great! Greta has always been a couch potatoe since I got her a year ago (her original owners moved to England) I can't picture her "sprinting" anywhere but her food dish!

Good luck with Buddy and you may want to check out the Health Issues area of the Message Board. I found lots of advice and support there.
