My 18mo old Monte is experiencing involuntary head tremors - like shaking his head 'no'. Ever heard of this? They just started yesterday. It's not like seizures because he's alert and aware. I noticed in a search of the archives some posts that were similar symptoms. I think he has an inflamed ear from allergies again and we're going to the vet today. It was suggested a vitamin B defincency in some of the post...help anyone?

Could be his ears, could be he's hungry. They get the head shakes sometimes when they're really hungry. Smaller, more frequent meals help that. We feed Jake breakfast and dinner. He gets a kong in the early afternoon when DH gets home so that he's eating frequently.

If you think it's the ears a trip to the vet couldn't hurt.

My mom's female boxer had head tremors when she was young (she is now 9). We never found any reason for them and it sounds very much like what you describe. She eventually grew out of it, it has been years since we noticed it. If it starts happening frequently, I would take him to the vet as it could be something. Keep us updated.

Flash got them once, just like you described. I scared the heck out of me. I did some research here which pointed to poor quality food. Sure enough, I had them on Purina One for about two days because of my work schedule. :( ( bad mommy) I can tell you I will never do that again. The tremors never returned. I hope you figure out waht the problem is.

There are various reasons, the vet said it could be from pain, low blood sugar, low quality food, and other unknown reasons. All of my pups have experienced head tremors at least once. Brady had them when he broke his toe, presumably because of the pain. He had the tremors at the vets office, mostly while being examined when the vet was manipulating his toe, vet wasn't concerned at all.
Abbie had them the end of not this past summer but the one before that. I called the vet (after hours, we don't have emergency clinics) and he said it happens quite frequently that time of the year and they don't know why. He said to keep an eye on her and if she went into a full seizure, keep her safe and stay calm during it. Fortunately it didn't progress past head tremors and lasted for a short time like he said. She hasn't had one since that I am aware of.
Tucker, my Mom's dog had one the end of this summer. Tossie had one everyonce in awhile, but a "cookie" usually solved the problem.

They are very scary the first few times you see it but eventually you can hold enough composure not to freak oout...

update head tremors

Monte and I saw the vet yesterday and he did have an inflamed ear. Perhaps that caused pain enough to stimulate temors. The vet thought some kind of toxin or mild poison (a pesticide, snail bait) will trigger muscle spasm and progress to seizures depending on level of ingestion...I should watch him. He thought he looked healthy so I'll just be patient and keep an eye on him. Maybe it's just a developemental thing. I'm pretty confident of the ingredients in his food. No allergens, (wheat & corn) higher protein content - lamb meal and rice. I may try pet tabs for added vitamins if the tremors continue. Thanks for the input - it seems a consistent experience - I feel better about what's happening to Monte.
