We are in the middle of treating our puppies mange. He is starting to grow fur back on the origional sites but the others are still pretty bald. How long does it take for that fur to come in?

Leah,

Hi, it has taken approx 6 weeks of treatment under our new regime for Majors hair to start growing back. When we were using the Ivomectin it took longer but on average after a hair folicle dies it is approx 6weeks, area's such as his ches have taken longer though.

I thought Porter had gotten a bit of mange before we got him (at 8wks) but after treating it (per the vet) the spots have never grown hair back. He has a 'buckshot' pattern on one hip and a few spots on his tush. They've never grown or changed since treatment....but he's almost 3yrs old....maybe it wasn't mange? Wonder what it was.

Tae had mange this summer and most of the hairless patches were small and hair loss was minimal. That said, on her mid-back area and on her back right where her tail "connect"s (she is not docked), she lost a lot of hair. The patch near her tail still looks funny. She's been off Ivermectin for almonst 2 1/2 mos and I can still tell there's less hair there. The hair looks as if it's less think and dents in a bit. I doubt anyone else would notice. I'm hoping the hair continues to grow and think it may be taking so long b/c she lost much hair from that spot!

My vet doesn't want to dip him and neither do I but it looks like the spots are getting bigger, and there are more of them. He said it would get worse before better, I just don't know if this is the "worse" It's been about 2 weeks... I put the cream on every night and he is also almost done with the antibiotics. I was just wondering how I know when it's either too much to handle and HAVE to dip him, or when it's finally slowing down...

Have you discussed ivermectin with your vet? That's what I gave Tae and it did the trick. I'd much rather treat with ivermectin than dips.

I haven't. I did not know about it until I read the boards here... I'm thinking of taking him in tomorrow and asking him.

Thanks for your help...If anyone else has any helpful tips or info I would love to hear from you!

Konah got demoxdex at about 3 1/2 month. Our vet put him on Ivomec (ivermectin in the States) and his check 2 weeks ago was clear. His spots are already filling in and he looks about 80% better. If you don't treat them with anything, it gets insanely worse before it gets better (at least our vet said that) because the imune system has to kick in. An antihistamine can help with the scratching which might help with the hair loss. When Konah stopped scratching like a demon, we noticed his patches weren't getting much worse and actually seemed to get better.

I'm sure ivomec isn't great for a really long period of time, as any meds, but it sure did the trick with Konah bear. ALso, we noticed when we bathed him about twice a week (puppies and their incredible ability to find dirt) with a hydrating oatmeal shampoo, it helped A LOT! And both the regrowth and existing hair are equally soft and shiny.

Hope this helps. Good luck and healing vibes are being sent your way.

I think we tried it all!!

Tyson came to us from the SPCA with demodex! He was initially dipped with not much change other than he felt terrible! Then the vet put him on ivermectin with a sulfur shampoo! The thing of it is he wanted to keep Tyson on the ivermectin for SIX months!! We saw results at first but it seemed that his progress reached a halt so of our own accord we took him off the ivemectin after 4 months and switched to a hollistic food and seameal and in just two weeks we are seeing results!! While the seameal is expensive I believe that it is helping!! Also rubbing the bald spots with olive oil after a good brushing seems to help soften the skin keep it from itching? Some think it helps the hair grow back but im not sure?!? Best fo luck!!
