I have a 4 month old puppy who likes both adults in the house. The puppy gets along with my 11 year old daughter and my 6 year old son. The puppy doesnt like the children as much as the adults, but does put up with them.

However, whenever my 20 year old step-son walks down the stairs or in the front door the puppy growls and acts fearful. There has been an adult at home every day at all times since we brought the dog home...so there hasnt been any time for the dog to have been mistreated since we got him home.

Any thoughts as to what could be causing this? And just as importantly, any thought on how to get the dog over his fear?

Thanks.

Hard to say what might be causing the fear but I have a couple of thoughts that come to mind.

Whenever your pup gets frightened, do not comfort her. Pretend that there is nothing going on, no reaction from you will help her through the fear. Petting her or telling her it is alright during this fear will only reinforce the fear.

The other thing that many dogs are sensitve about is the eye contact. Have your son avoid eye contact with your pup and see if that helps. Sometimes just the size of a tall man that stares down into the eyes of a dog can set them off, they feel challenged and fearful.

Socializing helps a lot. I would make apoint to get your pup out to meet and greet lots of people and new places if you are not already doing so. Keeps them comfortable with change and more well rounded.

I would agree with the eye contact. If my boys are worked up and I stare at them and point, they get even more worked up!

Your puppy could be going through a fear stage. You can do a seach of the forums for other people that have dealt with it. But like others have said, don't coddle your puppy when he/she is being fearful, it will only make them think they have something to be afraid of. Good luck!
