Hi everyone, my 6.5 month old boy Jaeger and I are getting ready for our first show. He's a flasy fawn and natural eared. We have been attending conformation classes 2X a week for the past 2 months ( before that we were doing socialization/conformation)... Jaeger knows what he should be doing, but we still have lots of minor issues like getting his head up, finding a good pace so I dont look like I am dragging him around the ring and trying to get him more animated for the judges...
I will be handling him myself and while I am doing it for fun, I dont want him to lose out because of my poor handling. This isn't a Big show, there will probably only be about 10 or so boxers ... I have been told by everyone including professional handlers that Jaeger is stunning and is going to pick up points..we are deemed competition
ANy tips on grooming pre show? other tricks of the trade? Also how long should a boxer show lead be? I always feel like I have too much lead to properly organize in my hand... and end up taking too long getting ready to do the triangle or down and back.
Thanks

Not sure when your first show is/was, but the #1 thing to keep in mind is that most of the time you will lose. Yes, that's pessimistic, but it's also reality. So focus on getting experience and having fun and it will happen when it happens. If you set your heart on winning you'll be disappointed more often than not, because even the best of the best boxers (Top 20 dogs) typically take at least 40 shows to finish, and one would assume that they finish fairly quickly compared to the norm.

As for the extra lead, you can shorten it up by putting it on your dog and measuring the amount of leash you want to keep free, then gathering up the excess and wrapping the leash around it in a loose knot. That gives you a kind of "knob" to hold in your palm instead of just dangling lead.

Truer words have never been spoken. If you're a sore loser, this is the wrong hobby for you. :D

Wow!

HEy guys, day one down. He got a bunch of ribbons, but he was the only Boxer pup, so he automatically won there. Of importance he got 2 Best of Winners! So 2 points! Hurray! He was up against 2 specials dogs and a a few other mature females. Jaeger took everything in stride and was so calm! I am such a proud mom, and I will post tomorrow with his results from then.
