Getting Him Into the Crate

I'm sure this has been asked before, but I don'thave time to read thru all of the different posts. Dino is 14 mos old and up until a week ago has never been crated. He has only 2 hours between when my husband leaves for work and when I come home from work. He has NEVER had a potty accident or really destroyed anything....until about a week ago when he tore down and shredded 2 window blinds within that week. He now has to go in what we like to call the "Monkey Cage". When I get home he's calmly lying down. There is a lot of drool tho and of course he's as crazy as a Tasmanian Devil when I let him out. The only real problem is, my husband has a harder time each day getting him into the crate. He lures him with treats even real marrow bones but of course Dino has caught on to all that! Any suggestions?

Do you think Dino has seperation anxiety? I think alot of drool might be a a sign. The best way that worked for us was to leave the crate wherever we were at that time. We left the crate door open at all times and would praise him ANY time he went near or in the crate.

Make it a safe comfy place for Dino...bed, lots of toys, a yummy filled kong (a must have) and maybe an old shirt of yours???

At bed time, we carried the crate into our bedroom and set it next to our bed. Then in the morning, I dragged it into the living room.

It will take some time for Dino to get used to the crate.....maybe even a month or so. I used a "Speical Treat" for when I would leave the house. Crash would only get it during those times, when he saw me get it ready he ran right into his crate....waiting!!! Some dogs take to the crate easier than others, but stay calm when trying to get Dino into the crate.

I would start working on this issue during the day when you'll be home for a while. Start praising...make it exciting, give Dino extra hugs and a treat each time he goes near or in it.

Good Luck!!!

My dog always gets a kong when he has to be crated. When he sees me getting ready to leave for work he can always be found waiting in his crate! Good luck

Kongs are good to keep them busy and safe-i would not let a dog have a bone unsupervised-just me... As for the crating he is young and will acclimate. My girl was a drooler :) but it passed pretty quickly. Just be consistent and calm and try to get him in there on his own-I used to walk my boy around on lead and pass the crate a few times until I actually lead him in. Seemed to cue him that it was his time to "kennel up" Good luck

my boy hates going into his crate but is fine once he's in there...a little barking for maybe 2 minutes when i leave to go to work but never at night (when we need to get a good night sleep and don't want to listen to the snoring lol)...putting a kong in there sounds like a really good idea but should i put peanut butter in it or what? i would think that would make him very thirsty...suggestions? i would love to have charlee just walk into his kennel when i tell him or when he sees me getting ready.

Separation anxiety

My dog Melvin suffers from separation anxiety and what I have tried is to put him in the cage while I am at the house it makes him feel safe to know I am still around and he barks a bit but calms down. I don't make a big deal either entering the room or if I have been out of the house . When I do arrive home I never go straight to him instead will look at the mail do some little thing just to let him know it is no big deal. I then let him out of the cage ( this is very hard)and act like I've just been in the other room no big deal. I also use kongs feed him in his cage Basically I do every thing I can to make cage = good Good luck.:)

Well, Dino is still making it hard to get him in the cage. My husband usually has to drag him in. When I get home he seems very miffed! He turns his head like he's ignoring me!! Of course, once I open the crate door it's like releasing a tasmanian devil. We've tried putting different treat items in there, like a thing that you can put treats in that he has to roll around to get them out. He won't touch it when he's in there. I can't wait until I can trust him out of his crate when we're gone. I suppose that won't be for a while. We tried it twice now and once he tore down a window shade and the other time he ripped down the Xmas lights that were in the same window. Everything was chewed to bits. He's good as gold when we're home and has NEVER had a potty accident. So I guess I need to be patient - it could be worse!

Dogs are like skin kids, sometimes they have to do things they don't like because it is safe for them. Sometimes people forget that crating is not just for the owner's convience (not having to clean up after they mess or destroy something) but also for the dogs safety. You don't want him to eat something that could cause him harm or knock something over on himself. Hang in there, he'll adjust in time (try to ignore those big sad brown eyes).

Holly does not like her crate either and I have to put her in there myself but, everytime I put her in there I say House! We have our other dog trained that if we say house she goes right in!
