Okay everyone, I need some advice....

My first foster boxer, Abner is going to be leaving soon to his forever home. Yeah!!! I'm so happy for him. I was worried he may not get adopted. We have had him since March and he had a rough life up to that point. He had been abused and due to this was blind. After many months and two operations he is finally healthy and healed and ready to go. My question is, how or what should I do with/for Sadie after he is gone? She has gotten pretty attached to him and they are buds! I know she is going to be lonesome and I want to help alleviate it as much as I can. I need some advice! We are all going to miss him terribly, he has the best attitude ever and is quite the thief! He loves stealing loaves of bread off the counter! That being said I am so proud that he will be getting his own family and that we got to be a part of it!

Yay for Abner, that's so wonderful that you nursed him back to health and made him an adoptable boy!

Hmmmm when does he leave? If you still have a few days, maybe gradually start separating them and spending some alone time with Sadie right away might help her get back to her old routine? After he's gone, just keep her busy. She'll adapt quickly I'm sure, no need to worry there. If she has some close doggie friends, have them over once a week or so just so she doesn't get too lonely. Or - start looking for another foster ;)

He has been a joy and an awesome learning experience for me and the whole family. He really is great and you honestly would not know he was completely blind without being told. He does have one eye that had to be completely removed and the other is totally blind. Everytime I look him I think he should be wearing a monocle and have a cigar in his mouth!

It may still be a little bit before he leaves, the home visit is completed, we are just waiting on the vet reference but so far everything seems right on. Thanks for responding and you pretty much told me what I had been thinking, but I just wanted to be sure I was doing all I should. I was also thinking about starting her in the next level of obedience classes to try and keep her busy right after he leaves. There will be a new class starting in the middle of October we can begin and that will have her around other dogs as well. :)

Thanks again!

When I was looking to adopt I saw Abner! He was so cute and I truely thought about it, but because of our cat we opted for a puppy. It's hard to find an older male that tolerates cats. I'm so happy for Abner! He sure was a handsome little guy and bless you for all you have done for him.

We're going through the same exact thing right now. Mackensie is a "single fur-child", and our foster Merlin has been with us for just over a month. If all goes as planned, Merlin will be getting adopted today. We have a meeting with his potential mom at 4. I'm worried about Mackensie getting depressed or being lost without him. But then again, maybe I shouldn't worry about it because we should be getting a new foster very soon. Our foster homes are all full to overflowing right now and there are so many Boxers that cannot come into rescue because we have no room for them, so as soon as someone has an opening it gets filled rather quickly.
Our real kids are having a tough time though. My middle child left for school crying this morning and the nurse called and said she was complaining of a tummyache... I'm definitely not taking the kids to meet Merlin's new mom! Watching him go will just break their hearts! I'll let you all know later how it goes.

We got the go ahead yesterday and they are coming down next weekend to meet him and possibly take him home. I hope all goes well, I know Sadie will love the one on one, but I know she will miss him. He has been as good for her and she has been for him.

Merlin was adopted!! His new mom and grandma came to meet him and they just fell in love. He is such a great dog. He was completely housetrained in only 2 weeks, and learned everything so fast. He was really starting to feel llike a part of our family, but I'm so happy for him! He will have a wonderful life and be spoiled by his new mom. He also has two big doggie sisters now and cats to play with.
Miss Mackensie keeps going to the door and window as if she's looking for him. She is eating okay, but seems to just lie around otherwise. She's not even interested in playing soccer!!! I hope she's just catching up on sleep and not getting depressed. He's only been gone 24 hours, so hopefully she will get better as time passes. Like I said before, it won't be long until we have another foster for her to play with!
