I have had a foster dog, male that is 1 1/2 yr old, for about 5 days. He does really well as long as he is not crated. He sleeps all night in my bed with no accidents. He is in the house all day-no accidents. I take him with me as much as I can, but sometimes I have to leave him home in the crate. He always pees in it. The first night he was here, I had him sleep in the crate and he peed it. I put him in a smaller crate and he pees it also. I have 3 other boxers which are in the same room when he is crated, only one of them is crated. He always pees toward the door of the crate so it goes out on the floor.
Does anyone have any suggestions? I am assuming it is separation anxiety, but surely there has to be a way to fix it.

Where is the crate? I have a 3 months old who we used to crate in the family room (alone) who peed (and barked) in the crate every night no matter how many times we took him out. We received a suggestion to move the crate into our bedroom and it worked! No more peeing, no more barking, and alot more sleeping (he let us sleep to 7:30 this morning!).

Help - Need solution to crate peeing soon because of health issues

The crate is in the bedroom. We have another crate in there for our old guy who has problems holding his bladder that he stays in when we are gone, but he rarely pees his crate and has not done so since we have had the foster dog here. Then we have 2 other boxers who stay in the bedroom when we are gone uncrated. The only time I crate him is when I have to be gone. With not knowing this dog, I can't leave him out in the house for fear of chewing up my furniture or peeing on the sofa.

He is going to have to go through heartworm treatments soon. That means he has to be quiet so he will have to spend even more time in the crate and it can't be wet all the time. I need to find a solution soon.

I am going to leave him a bone to chew on today when I go to church and see if that helps. If not, then I will try to put the crate in another room away from the other dogs.

My dogs are not allowed to sleep with me and I even let him sleep with me at night so he is not crated then. If I am going somewhere and not going to be gone long, I take the dog with me so he doesn't have to be in the crate. The new kid on the block is being given all I can give. I am desperate to find a way to help him. I am open to more suggestions.

Thanks.

It could be separation anxiety. It's also possible that he has been crated for too long in the past and was forced to pee in his crate so he doesn't see anything wrong with it. Would it be possible to leave him in an exercise pen, instead of a crate. That way he will have a little more room to move around it. You could leave some potty pads for him to pee on and then at least he won't have to lie in it.

Good luck!

Help with dog peeing crate

I also believe it is separation anxiety. When you speak of an exercise pen, are you talking about an outside pen? If not , I don't have a exercise pen or know what it is. I have a heated sun porch on the back of my house with a doggie door which goes into the fenced back yard. The only problem with that is he has escaped once while I let him out to pee. I fixed the problem, but I think he would dig out if left there by himself.

When this dog was at the rescue kennel, they said he never peed his area.

Any time he has been crated, he pees. Whether it has been 30 minutes and the longest time in there has been 2 hrs. He goes all night (9 hrs) without peeing so I know he doesn't do it because he can't hold it.

This dog is perfect in all other ways. I would love to adopt the dog, but if this continues, my husband will not let me.

Exercise pens can be used outside or inside. You most often see them at dog shows. I have used a X-pen with Moto, but inside. I was usually gone for too long to put him in a crate, so I used and exercise pen with potty pads. It worked quite well.

Thanks, Jan, I appreciate the info. I will check them out if I can't fix this problem otherwise.

This morning I was gone twice for about an hour each time. I put a bone and kong with peanut butter in with him. He did great both of those times. I gave him lots of praise for being a good boy. Maybe he was bored and needed something to keep him busy. I am hoping I am on to a solution.

I have looked for chew toys, but they are all so cheaply made that I don't think they would last long with him before they were chewed to pieces.

He is such a good dog otherwise and it would be such a shame not to be able to get him to kick this habit.
