fiestsivon I finally found a butcher in this area, which has been hard we live in the middle of nowhere, the nearest grocery store is 45 min away. The butcher will GIVE us offal, soup and other bones for FREE!!!! All I have to do is show up the day after they cut the carcass. They have free pork, deer and beef.

Wow! I thought I lived in the middle of smallville, but 45 minutes to a grocery store? I'd hate to run out of something in the middle of cooking! I think I'll go to the meat plant here and ask them about that. They are a small plant, and very friendly. Maybe I'll get that lucky too!

We live in a very small town, we have a grocer, but it is so over priced you'd rather spend the gas. The upside our nearest neighbor is about 2.5 miles away.

This butcher is one who does local farm cut ups and hunter kills. I just used google and searched "butchers, smalltownville tn" of course substitute your town.

just curiously, where in TN are you? If anywhere near the TriCities area I wonder if I could get in on this fantastic deal you have going? :)

I am in Rutledge, but the butcher is in Rogersville (my parents live there).

I am not sure of the lengths of the bones, hated to be to picky on free stuff. I have been thinking on what to do if we end up with whole leg bones....hmmmm and ax? Hubby wasn't to keen on using his saw to cut bones lol!!

You could always make a nice leg lamp out of the leg bones! (A Christmas Story anyone?) Sorry, couldn't resist, it made me think of that when I read your reply.

You might make sure they will refrigerate what you want for you. If I don't get to my butcher right after they kill, it all just goes into tubs outside. Getting fresh offal and bones is the best. I can get all kind of free stuff from mine too.

You can easily cut up bones with a hacksaw. :) It is a little bit of work, but it works.

Right now Moto has half a buffalo leg (I got it for free) out in the yard, which he is working away at. My brother-in-law slaughtered an old bull and sold half of it to me for dog food. So I now have half a buffalo (375 pounds) in the freezer.
