Hi Boxer folks,
I'm new to the board, but wanted to share an experience we had today with our 4 month old fawn female Berkley.
When we got up this a.m. her eyes were nearly swollen shut and seemed as big as golf balls. So we immediately took her to the vet . He said alleric reaction to an insect bite probably and gave her a shot of prednisone and some benadryl. well she's all better now, but scared us pretty good anyone else have boxer allergic reactions like this?

Yes, Ruby has had a few bee stings and a spider bite. We did the trip to the vet (prednisone shot; $90.00) the first time. Now we keep Benadryl on hand; 1 mg per pound of body weight.

Elsa,
the vet gave me a bottle of prednisone and a bottle of benadryl. Says we will need to have them handy-- in case.
She came home from the vet this afternoon and played and played.

Glad to hear the Berkley is okay. It must have been pretty scary.

See my post earlier this week on Hives! My 5 month old is still struggling after two visits to the emergency vet and one to our regular vet. She was symptom free while at the regular vet and then came home and started to get hives again, although not near as bad as before (probably because she was on prednisone). I also gave her a benadryl. This morning she didn't have hives but had the makings of them on her head and ears (bright red, etc). I gave her the prednisone and another benadryl. I sure hope that whatever it is that is bothering her working its way out of her system. The ragweed and mold have been terrible here as well as the heat. Hopefully it is just a combination of all of those. I guess I will find out when she is off the prednisone.

It was all very scary though. I hope Berkley is better soon.

Rocky had a reaction to his second booster shot. Both his eyes swelled shut. We also did the vet thing and got a shot of benadryl. The shot helped the swelling but later that night he got hives and was very itchy but wouldn't let anyone touch him. I felt really bad for him. The vet thought it was the lepto part of the vaccine.

So sorry that Berkley was so ill. My Boomer is allergic to dust( I think)and a couple of other things I have'nt figured out yet. He's always sneezing, and blowing out snot. I wonder how often I can use Benadryl safely? Anyone know?

Is there anything like Claritin or Alegra for canines? For the poor seasonal allergy doggie sufferers...

I have also had this problem. My Gus had some kind of allergic reaction about 4 months ago. His eyes were both swollen and one eye was oozing this thick yellow stuff. It was disgusting. Anyway, the vet gave him a shot of prednisone and told me to give him 1 benedryl up to 3 times a day. It took him about 3 days to recover. I had to put warm washcloth compresses on his eye...let me just say...eewwwwwwww!!!

Poor Babies. Give Berkley a slobber from Gus.
