my boxer is infatuated with eating wood. she not only chews on sticks, but she also eats them. i was never really concerned about this until she started vomiting profusely the other morning. xrays showed that her stomach was full. we had spent the prior weekend house sitting for my parents. they have to german shorthair pointers and their dog house has cedar chips in it. apperently my dog decided that this would be a tasty snack and ate abunch of them. now every time we go to visit she goes out and starts to eat the cedar chips. i am starting to wander if she has is lacking a mineral and maybe is trying to get it from the cedar chips. any suggestions?

What kind of food do you feed? Do you supplement with any vitamins or minerals?

I have a couple of boxes of that schweet scoop cat litter that is made out of wheat and I can't use it because the dogs like the taste of it. I came home one day and the litter box was completely empty. It does smell pretty good (clean of course ;)) so I can see why they would like the taste of it. As far as sticks and whatnot, mine have never tried, hope they never do.

I would bet she is lacking in something like you said.

normal

Roxy and Knuckles do this too. I used to think it was because they were teething but now I know it's not because Roxy is 1 1/2 years old. I thiink its a texture thing. Roxy loves to try and eat the old straw broom we have too! What we do is give them a variety of textured toys to help satisfy that need...and keep a close eye on them too to make sure they don't start licking the firewood like they just love to do!

as far as food goes she gets diamond naturals with lamb and rice, her vet suggested this saying that it might be easier on her stomach. for now she doesn't receive any suppliments.
