My son called the other day and said Baxter was throwing up. I asked what did it look like and he said undigested food - lots of whole pieces of kibble. I said he probably ate a little fast and it didn't set right on his stomach, not to worry. Then we watched him at our house this weekend. Everything was ok until Sunday. We left for about 4 1/2 hours. When we came home Baxter had pooped (on a throw rug by the door), in the house. Very, very unusual for him. We put him and our boxer (who is kenneled while we are away) out. We cleaned up the mess and put out fresh water and food (it was suppertime). We let the boys in and our pup wasn't hungry, he wanted to play tug. Baxter acted like he had never seen food before in his life. He absolutely gorged himself - gobbled food like he was never going to get any more. Drank water as if he was parched. Then it wasn't five minutes, and he upchucked in four different places before we could get him outside. Kibble that was not digested, and didn't even look like it had been chewed - just swallowed whole. What is going on with this boy?? He has recently been to the vet and she spotted nothing wrong with him. Any ideas??? Please help!!

My girl will throw up if she has too much water right after she eats. Also, if she goes too long without anything in her stomach she will throw. How often do you feed? Or could just be your boy has an upset stomach and this will pass. No change in diet, right?

No changes in diet, or routines. We always have plenty of water out, Fresh food is set out twice a day. I don't know if he is anxious about something or what??

It sounds like he is eating a bit too fast to me, and then drinking water. If he is eating that fast, maybe he is getting too much air in with the food and then gulping water, which makes it come right back up. You might try putting a bigger ball, like a tennis ball or something to that effect in his bowl when you feed him to help slow him down. They have to try to eat around the ball which is a bit harder and takes longer. Or, even try feeding him on a baking sheet with the food spread out on it. It takes longer to eat it that way. I did that a few times when my pup was smaller because he too is a gulper, and it did slow him down. Maybe put a certain amount of water in his bowl so that he can't drink too much right after he eats. Then, a little bit later, you can fill more water in the bowl. :)

throwing up undigested food

My boxer also often throws up undigested food -- she has a condition called megaesophagus. I'm not sure if it's the same as what yours has, but one thing you can check for that might be helpful to tell a vet is if Baxter is vomiting vs. regurgitating. Vomiting would involve retching and then throwing up the food. I think in that case it would probably be more likely to be digested. Regurgitating is when the food just comes out with no retching -- more like a burp but then undigested food comes out with it.

(You can do an internet search on megaesophagus to read more about it, but I'm not suggesting that that's necessarily what Baxter has!)

What else is he eating?

When my girl gets into something she should not be eating, she often throws up immediately after eating. It's sort of nature's way of taking care of the problem. For example, she loves to chew on sticks but I must stop her right away because she swallows some bits of wood. Having a sensitive stomach, she'll throw up right after eating and it seems to clean it out of her system. Maybe your pup is sneaking his idea of treats that you're not aware of.
