We have a rescue boxer now 7 years old, and she is eating her own waste....anything we can do that will remedy this problem? She is fed twice a day, so hunger isn't the problem...we are at a loss!

The easiest way to stop her is to remove the waste immediately.

Sorry, do not have any further experience on this.

Biff (and many others here on the boards) went through this phase - I think someone suggested adding something to their food which discourages them from eating it, but you'd have to do a search.

We just made sure we picked his poop up before he had a chance to eat it, always telling him nonoicon

We have the same problem. I didn't understand it and was grossed out so
I ran a yahoo search on eating poo and found some reasons and solutions.

I found that dogs may eat poo for several reason.
1) because they still see some nutrition in the poo that was not completely digested.
2) that during house breaking a dog may become confused on where to go and covers their tracks by eliminating it by eating it.
3) that a mother pup will eat the pups poo to keep the area clean.
4) that a dog will eat other dogs poo to remove that other dogs scent.
there was somemore but I forgot.

Solutions
1) remove the poo completely each time
2) *I would not do this one but it said put hot sauce on it to make it untasteful... To me if your there anyway and are going to go threw that trouble just remove it...lol
3) There is something that you can put in the food so that when they go poo it will not be looked at as good.

That is all that I can remember...

We just remove the poo everytime... we also have kids that play in the yard so this solution was already being thought of before the issue came about.

We have an appointment for puppy shots on Monday so Im talking to our vet further to better understand it. We will just be picking it up though... I would talk to your vet before adding any type of substance to food or poo.

The best and simplest solution is simply to pick it up and dispose of it immediately following production. If that isn't feasible, then you might look at changing her food to something more digestible (which in turn means less protein and other attractive things in the waste). That does help with some dogs, so is worth trying.

I personally would avoid adding substances to her food to make it less attractive. Those powders are actually MSG. Given that many people suffer headches, nausea and heart palpitations as a side effect of consuming MSG and your dog is incapable of telling you if she suffers similar side effects - it really does not seem worth it. A more natural alternative is adding pineapple to the food, which produces a similar and equally effective result (equally effective meaning it works in some cases, not in others). Unfortunately, there isn't a solution to this problem that works in all cases (well, except for the pick it up immediately one ;)).

everyone had great advice. I just came here to say, I know what you're going through! Zeke is a poo eater, although now that he's older, he doesn't do it as much.

I tried the stuff you add to their food, but it made them (Zeke ate his and Lu's too) have runny poo which in turn, made it hard to clean up completely. The short story is, it was an awful mess.

I gave up on remedies and just just tried to clean up after them as quickly as possible.

I do have to add poo-burps are the worst.
