Ear cropping originated when the Boxer was used for bull and bear baiting (and sometimes fighting). Ears were cropped short so that the opponent had less to grab on to. Today it is purely cosmetic, although it is required by the US AKC Boxer Standard. Many people feel that ear cropping lends a nobility to the expression that you don't see with uncropped ears. It is a person's choice to crop or not - uncropped ears are not a disqualification to the standard so uncropped dogs can be shown, although at this time they do have a more difficult time finishing.
