Last weekend we went to Lake Patagonia and enjoyed the lake with our dogs (Debo and rottie/lab mix Jasmine)...during our time there, we saw animal control ...so me being the big animal lover, had to go and check out what happened...

These teenage girls had brought their dogs and decided to leave the windows cracked about two inches and leave the dogs in the car (2 dogs) while they went out and had fun on the lake. Mind you, it's about 100 degrees and this lake had dogs all over the place. I don't know how long those dogs were in the car, but what I do know is that these dogs went HEAT CRAZY, they tore and destroyed the inside of the girls' car and apparently, it was the girls themselves that called the Ranger because the dogs did not recognize them and would not let them in or near the car. Animal control had to hold one of the dogs for about a half hour outside until it recognized it's owner.

The saddest part of all was that the dogs were given back to the girls when it was all over. :(

I know they were charged with animal abuse though - the ranger told me that.

To me, they didn't deserve those dogs back. How could anybody leave their dogs in the car on a hot Arizona day??? That is just sick, especially when there is a lake right there and a bunch of other dogs walking by the car... sad.

ohmygawd...that is a heinous crime if I ever heard one.

How could they even fathom leaving their dogs in the car like that? Geez. I feel guilty if I'm on my way somewhere with Rebelle and I leave her in the car for 2 mins while I pay for gas, or go to the ATM or something! And it's not even hot like that here.

Some people just do not deserve to have animals. I know if that were any of us board members, we'd have the dogs playing in the lake *with* us, not left behind in the car! Grrr  makes me so angry.

How awful!
There is stuff on the news all the time warning about the dangers of a hot car, but people still do it. I don't understand!!

Recently, here in Oregon, a woman left her 4-year old foster boy in the car while she went to work!!! This story did not have such a happy ending -- the little boy died!

Sometimes I think people with no common sense don't deserve to roam this earth.

That is horrible story. Unfortunately mine is worse BECAUSE of animal control.

My 1.5 year old, healthy Rottie escaped from our backyard last Friday, we don't know how she got out. Animal control picked her up and put her in the back of their unit. The only ventilation on the unit was a slit in the door (these are totally enclosed units - little ovens basically). They didn't give her any water and it was over 100 that day in Plano, Texas. During the 33 minute trip from our house to the pound my dog had a heatstroke. The emergency animal hospital did a great job trying to save her but 24 hours later it was time to give up. When we asked the Director of Animal Control why they didn't secure the dog in our backyard they said they didn't know which yard was hers. Funny part about that is that they posted the notice on my front door saying that they had impounded her.

If anyone out there knows of an attorney in the Dallas area that would like to handle a lawsuit please forward a name and number. My dog can't be replaced but hopefully by suing the city I can force them to admit their guilt and maybe this won't happen to another animal.

Thanks for letting me vent.

I am so sorry to hear about your loss. :(

What venue is your animal control? County, City, ...? Perhaps a letter-writing campaign or petition would bring this to the attention of the lawmakers that there needs to be some kind of change made. I'd be willing to write to the animal control and express my anger and frustration.

I work for an attorney. I'll see if he knows of anyone in Dallas.
Hang in there!

I would just like to add here that for example , last summer, a mother went to gamble for 'a few minutes' and her baby (about 5 months old) perished in the hot car (court case followed)!!!. Passers by here are mostly quite vigilent and call the police or smash the window in, when a dog or baby is noticed to be in distress. There is also a $ fine for it. However on some occasions it is not noticed or when it is too late, even within a busy carpark - tragedy happens *every year*. It always makes me very sad/sick how ignorant someone can be with their own children or pets.

Hi plano,

I live in Rockwall just about 15 miles east of you. I don't know any lawyers but will ask around. My thoughts are with you.

Meri,

I don't know any attorneys per se but have you contacted the media? Channel 4,5,8 or 11 might just run a story. It is worth a phone call to each one. I know that Shawn Rabb at Channel 4 is a great guy; I have done an interview/story with him in the past and he can and does get results from them.

Also, please go to Plano's city hall and fill out an open records request form and get all the records pertaining to your situation as well as the city's ordinances on animals - all of them, you don't know which parts might come in handy. Look and see if there are any parts which speak directly to how loose animals are supposed to be handled/transported. If the airlines are smart enough to know that animals "cook" in the heat, shouln't animal control know that??
Please let me know what you find out.

Oh Meri,

that's horrible! I am so sorry for your loss. My thoughts are with you!
Animal control is so obviously in the wrong and responsible for the passing of your beloved pet. Stay strong and fight them! If your case brings attention to the problem and saves someone else's pet from the same fate, then at least you can gain something positive from your loss.
