Just wondering if it's still normal at 8 months for my little guy to not be raising his back leg to pee?? Haha this is my first male and he has done it a COUPLE of times but that's IT!! Just wondering if this is normal???
Our boy Waldo usually lifts his leg, occasionally just stands there
From what I've read in other threads on this subject, either way is completely normal:cool:
My dog Chich didn't start lifting his leg until around 12 months old. Mambo is almost 6 months and kinda cocked his leg for the first time yesterday. It was obvious he wasn't quite sure what he was supposed to do.....
Perfectly normal Not all males ever lift their legs, but most who do seem to start somewhere between 6-12 months. If you really want him to do it, the way to 'teach' is to give him time around other males who do lift (it's largely a learned behaviour).
Personally I wouldn't bother though. From the owner perspective, I think it's preferable to have a dog that doesn't lift (i.e. enjoy it for as long as you can).
I agree about it being a "learned behavior" I had a female terrier growing up that had to lift her leg to pee after seeing a male do it. Clay still doesnt lift his, and personally Id like to keep it that way.
Rolen is 13 months old and has recently started to lift his leg to mark when we are on walks. He still squats to pee in the yard and personally I hope he doesn't start lifting his leg in the yard!
Cody is almost 3 and he doesn't lift his leg he just goes out sniffs for the best place and then just stands and goes .. Sarah Baily said it.." A Blessing" Its great because He doesn't have to take 15 mins to mark every bush or tree he just stands goes and then he done although he does do this thing with his feet sometimes like he is wiping them .. Now thats funny to watch..
Scrappy doesn't always lift his leg and we are not sure how old he was when he started to as we adopted him at age two. Our Japanese Spitz didn't lift his leg until he was nearly a year old.
