Please help. My male boxer, Tyson, was in a fight 2 days ago and was attached by 2 narky Dalmations. My husband managed to pin our boxer down, but the Dalmations were still pulling fiercely on his 2 front legs. He has bite makrs on his legs and on one of his pads. Our neighbours advised us to simply keep the infection away by rubbing tea tree on the bites every couple of hours. Would any of you advise this? He has had a tetanis injection a couple of months ago

I'd still err on the cautious side and get your boy to see a vet. Leg & foot wounds (and especially in between pads/toes) can be breeding grounds for infection even if your baby is up-to-date on shots.

I don't think that tea tree will do anything for infection but does have beneficial healing properties. It should also not be applied directly to an open wound, but rather around the wound or in the vicinity of the wound to assist the healthy tissue that is undamaged.

When dogs go after legs in a fight they are usually trying to cripple...and worse. I'd be very cautious about your dog coming in contact with those Dalmatians again. Keep your baby safe and give him lots of love while he's healing.

Beasley and I are sending big hugs!

thanks beasley's mum

Hugs are warmly received! Popped home for lunch and My boy is still much the same, so maybe I will take him to the vet afterall. Just in case..... very interesting fact about dogs that bite feet want to cripple, feel so angry as the Dalmations are so badly behaved. Our whole neighbourhood agrees.

So sorry to hear your Tyson has been victimized by the neighborhood bullies. I would send a cop over to their house, and then present the owners with the vet bill. But then, I'm a bit of a troublemaker. ;)

My boy Otis had a foot wound this past summer, and it went deep enough where he wanted to lick it. The licking kept opening the wound and made it take longer to heal.

I wrapped the foot in gauze, then used a sticky Ace bandage type of wrapping to protect the gauze, and then sprayed the whole thing with bitter apple to stop him from worrying the wound.

I had to keep it dry, but it worked like a charm. (It took a while to get this magical combination, but in case you end up with the same predicament, I thought I'd share my experience).

Hope your baby feels better soon!

I just peeked at your gallery pics and your babies are sooooo gorgeous! Tyson looks much like my Beasley - he has the same funny pink bottom lip/chin with the freckles!

Another thing you can try as a topical is Neosporin - but do keep an eye on Tyson in case he starts licking the area a lot. I doubt that a little Neosporin would really hurt him if injested, but that's one of those things that probably tastes really yummy but isn't really good for them to eat ;)
