I have a special needs pup that I have had since she was 4wks. Zowie is now about 9 months. I installed her a dog door that I put her big cage up against when i leave. I tried the leaving her in thing and she did okay but still understandably got into things. So now when I'm gone She's either outside or in her cage. This works out pretty nice, but she has destroyed all her beds. She chews them up and drags them out and what not. This is so frustrating but better than it being my couch. She definately knows it's bad it obvious from her body language. Any suggestions, as far as type of bed or tricks to stop her from doing this? I'm mad and scared for her health too. And also for those who have dog doors have you heard of any mat or rug that helps tracking in mud and whatever else that sticks to the feet. or tricks for wiping the feet...

thanks,
Andy

maybe you should buy a kong and stuff it with treats or peanut butter.. i understand that they can be very useful in helping them to stay occupied...sound like your pup is just bored.. or maybe suffering from seperation anxiety.. try the kong or other chew toys.. as for wiping their feet.. i just have my dogs sit and i wipe their feet with a towel that i keep by the door just for that... mine didnt like it much at first but are ok with it now..

I would just take her bed away. She willl survive without one. Boxers tend to go through a destructive stage where they will destroy any bed. They will eventually grow out of it and then you can give them their bed back. :)

Farley can't even have towels in his crate bc he chews them up and I'm afraid the strings will get tangled in his intestines and cause a BIG problem. Drs. Foster and Smith sell a crate liner that is rubber lined and much like a thin carpet. It is difficult for the pup to chew on bc it sticks to the crate bottom and they can't easily paw it up. This may be a good solution if you feel bad about your pup laying on the hard plastic all day! :)

thanks for the ideas. I do leave treats and chewy things but she takes them outside. i might try some bitter spray if i must try the bed thing again. but as for now she'll have to do without she does have a blanket that she doesn't shred too much. I think she just startsa little hole in her beds and then sees the stuffing and wants to get it all out.
