I have a 9 month old that has been crate trained since the day he came out of the birthing box. It is a Petmate Large (42x32x48). He has never had an issue with going in unless he know it was for time out, but he has gotten better.
The first time he "broke out" was right after we put up the Christmas tree this last year and then went shopping. When we got home he had attached the tree, tore up some of the couch cushions and did his business in the house. I found that he had pulled the back of the cage in on it self and gotten out that way. I used zip ties and secured the crate.
He stayed in with no issues until about a month ago when he broke the small door on the front of his crate and got out again. He has now started breaking off pieces of the floor tray. I don't know if he thinks he can get out this way or he just hates the floor tray. (he learned early on how to scratch until he was able to get it totally out of hte way).
Here is my question should i get him a plastic crate or see how he does with the plastic floor out? He has very few accidents in his crate that is not what i am worried about it is more the thought of him on the tile floor and the wire mesh. I can not put in any cloth or bedding he will pee or poo in it and then ball it up in one of the corners of the crate, this is the only time he has an "accident" in his crate.
Any advise would be helpful.
