Boxer Pal
My three year old boxer (Mika Barkinnen) was diagnosed with demodectic mange about two weeks ago. The vet Rx'ed cow/swine syrum...I don't recall the name of the med off the top of my head. She also Rx'ed Benedryl caps as needed, which we give with peanut butter.
All was going well for several days...no itching, the patches of mange were looking much better. Yesterday, I came home to find that Mika had rubbed the spot on his head so much that it was bleeding and red again. I put a dab of Benedryl cream on it (he didn't like that). Consequently, he rubbed it off within 5 minutes on one of the couch cusions. I warned him to stop rubbing it, or I would MAKE him stop. Of course, he looked at me with his best "Yeah, right" look. So, off to Petsmart I went. I bought an E collar, and a spray bottle of 0.5% Hydrocortisone Spray. I got home, put the collar on him, and carefully sprayed his owie, which is approximately 1.5" above his left eye. The e-collar freaked him out, but eventually, he just layed down and accepted defeat.
Bedtime came, and I figured I would take the collar off. When I did, I noticed that both of his eyes were almost swollen shut, and one side of his muzzle was swollen too. I didn't think I got any of the spray in his eyes, nor did I think I sprayed so much that it would run into his eyes. At any rate, I felt horrible. Is he having an allergic reaction to the spray, or do you think I got it in his eyes? I wiped his face down thoroughly with a cool, clean wet cloth, and this morning -while better- his eyes are still swollen. Is this something I should be overly concerned with? Or, should I just keep a close eye on him for the next 24-36 hours to see if things improve or not? Thanks!
