I have a question about daycamp. We are trying to get
our dog into CGC and the trainer suggested we bring her to
daycamp and she would evaluate her around other dogs
etc... and give us suggestions. She can be REALLY
crazy around other dogs on leash so we are going to
get some training for this, I dont thnk it is healthy
for her when she gets all fired up like that.
She has had basic obedience which has helped but we
want to continue with training.

I guess the trainer uses her dog as a way to evaluate
all dogs. She says Gracie didn't pick up her dogs
signals or something like that and now they say she
isn't "daycamp material". Which is fine if that is
true, but this "magical dog" theory seems a little
silly to me, no? We had no intention on using daycamp
unless we go awayand kennel her, but now I am
wondering about the trainer herself if she puts so
much stock into her dogs opinion of other dogs.
But this may be a comon practice, so I want to just
get opinions.

Thanks,
Kevin

Just wanted to tell you my Experience with CGC:
We went to Obed. then we went to Intermediate Obed. and at the end of that our trainer said we had the option to test for CGC. The last class she had an evaluator come and test all the dogs. The evaluator brought another stranger and dog for distraction and to see how our dogs were around them. There are I think 10 specific things that are tested and the evaluator rates them and decides if you and your dog have passed. I do know that a big part of the test is reaction to other dogs and people. So maybe find a different trainer to take obed. with and get some more interaction with a class full of dogs.

I don't know why you would have to send your dog to daycamp to prepare for the CGC - unless its just for the socilization. Seems a bit odd to me. Both my two have passed their CGC we prepared by attending a 7 week class where we practiced the 10 areas that you are tested on and between classes we practiced on our own. Neither of my dogs are perfect around all dogs but on the night of the test they both did fine with the strange dog that was brought in for the exercise.

Does your trainer run the daycamp - perhaps she jsut wants to make $$ by recommending you send her to the daycamp. You might want to consider another trainer I can recommend some depending on what area your in.
