You could do a search on 'crate training' to see all of the benefits. Your puppy would be safest in her crate. PLEASE don't leave your pup outside when you are not home. Boxers are very allergic to certain things (plants, bees, etc.) and it's not safe for her to be outside. Plus, you run the risk of her getting out of the yard or getting stolen. Also, Boxers cannot tolerate extreme temperatures (either hot or cold). They really don't have much fur to protect themselves against the cold, and their snub noses prevent them from keeping themselves cool when it's hot outside.
It's definitely something I would look into.

Crates... a good thing

I know all the things Luka gets into when I'm with him- couldn't imagine what he'd do without supervision!
Crate training is tough at first, but it definatly gives me peace of mind.

My puppy is 18 weeks old and is crate trained, we started the day we brought him home. He actually likes his crate, I keep it by a window and he loves to look outside. I noticed you are from Alabama, just curious what part, I am in Tuscaloosa.

crates are definitely good if you use them PROPERLY. First of all you should never leave your puppy in the crate for too long. I have a 10week old pup and a 2.5 yr old that i crate together. My 2.5 yr old is male and he was marking my house. He was my mom's dog and when she died, he came to live with me. He also would mark her house. When we got our new puppy for him to have a playmate and our daughter to have her own pup, we got the crate. At first we just put the puppy in there...but after anight of whining, we decided to put Malachi(the 2.5 yr old) into the crate with her. She missed her mom and sisters/bros(litter of i think 11 or 13), and this solution has worked for us until she is too big. We crate them when we are gone and at night. we have no problem at all with either of them using the bathroom in there.

However, you should let your dog outside before crating and after crating. I dont suggest putting food/water in the crate unless there is a way for it not to get dumped out all over the crate.

Hope that helps
Katie

i know you said you've got multiple dogs... and this is what concerns me. that you say you don't have $60 to buy a crate for your new pup... but have many dogs. where are you going to get the money to pay for emergency vet visits and or emergency care god forbid any of your babies needed it? especially if he's out in the yard unsupervised.

i always cringe when i see a pet owner say they don't have the money because having a pet is the same responsibility as having a child. and you wouldn't have a child unless your were financially sound would you?

I agree w/ Cayman's Mom.. a little troubling that you don't have enough money for a crate, but hey I don't know you or your situation, and I know at times everyone can have a hard time.
Since it's around Christmas time, maybe ask for a dog crate as a gift?

I have always uses a crate for my dogs. My Boxer baby has used her crate since she was 8 weeks old (she is now 4 months), and she just loves it. We place a blanket over the back half of the crate to give her that den-like feeling which gives her a sense of security. When she is really tired she just goes into her crate with no problem and goes fast asleep. I think crates are wonderful and wouldn't do without one.

Also, I volunteer at our local SPCA and they always have crates available for a nominal fee which is a lot cheaper then the pet stores, and they are in excellent shape. If you have more than one dog I am sure you could afford a used crate.

Good luck.

What concerns me more than ANYTHING here, is that her dogs are "left outside"

Boxers are under NO CIRCUMSTANCES "outside dogs". They should always be indoors, unless you are letting them out to potty or exercise (supervised). Their short noses, combined with short coats do not allow them to tolerate extreme heat or cold.

Several people have very elaborate, sheltered dog runs, which can be an exception, but please do not leave your Boxer outside in the backyard unattended.

That being said, when you put your dog inside, you will often notice that they get into things that they shouldn't, or potty where they shouldn't, or chew things up out of boredom or seperation anxiety. This is where a crate comes in handy. It's for their safety, and is a very useful training tool.

Please bring your Boxer indoors, and buy a crate
