We just bought a puppy and are looking for crates. What is an appropriate crate size? Is there a particular kind of crate that would be better?

You will probably need an x-large size, unless you have a very small boxer. If it is hot where you live you will probably find that the wire ones are best as they are a little cooler. Some dogs are more comfortable in the plastic ones as they are more den like. You can always cover the wire ones with a blanket. You can also find some wire ones that have a divider in them so that you can adjust the size as they grow. You don't want it to be too big for them when they are a puppy. If they can pee in one end and sleep in the other they will. :) They only need enough room to stand up, turn around, and lie down. As rule of thumb, you can leave your puppy in his crate for one hour, plus his month in age. For example you can leave a two month old pup in his crate for a maximum of 3 hours.

Good luck with your pup!

Super Boxer
For our pup, we bought the Large Wired crate from a pet supply store.
It fits a 70 pound dog, ( even has a pic of a boxer for that size category) it came with an inside "puppy" gate to block off. I think this is the best as the wired crates have great air circulation and we have ours covered with a blanket and when he is in at night we cover the whole thing so it is nice and dark with a couple of squishy's and his blanets to lay on.

If you dont have a crate with an inside adjustable gate, then you can use a paper box to block off the extra area, so he will not do his business where he sleeps.

Good luck and i hope this helps.

We have this one too and our's can fold up which makes it really nice to transport because those big crates don't always fit in a vehicle when you don't have the room !! :)

den crate

When we first picked up Nikita we purchased a smaller size den crate (she was only 8 lbs). When she turned 4 mths we picked up a large den crate (up to 65 lbs). Hopefully she won't get any bigger than that! We opted for the den opposed to the wire crate because we have 3 kids and didn't want them constantly poking at Nikita. It has a wire door with enough holes on the sides. She has her blankets and a nylabone in there. She's only in there to sleep and has never cried, nor had an accident in it! Sometimes you can find used crates for sale in the classifieds (saves lots of money!). I would have opted for that but hubby felt the little princess needed the rolls royce of crates. Next will be diamonds on her collar!
