Its way to early to phone the vet so I thought I would run it by you guys. My boy started coughing yesterday. No snotty eyes or nose he did sneeze a couple of times this morning. It sound like he is trying to hack up a hairball or something is in his throat. I suspect it may be kennel cough and he could have picked it up anywhere as he goes to day care and the dog park. Other than the hacking he seems fine and he does hack more if excited. Last night we were laughing at him because normally he will bark to go out and he kept coughing and looking at the door so we were joking that he had lost his "bark". How long will kennel cough take to clear up?

It does sound like kennel cough. It usually takes about 3 weeks to run it's course. You can try giving honey to ease the cough.

We are going through the same thing. Braddock's hacking has increased over the past few days although I don't think it's kennel cough as he seems to only do it when I get home (and he's excited) and also every morning he wakes us up at 5:00 on the dot hacking very similar to a hairball. It goes on for 10-20 minutes and has us worried since he doesn't seem to be able to breathe well at times.

Does the hacking look as if he's choking? Some call it a backward sneeze. Or, they do it due to an allergy. I was told that they have like a cleft pallet and during that cough it's trying to be pushed back. I was told to cover their nose so they're forced to breath through their mouth and it stops.

Definately! The honey worked very well with Chief in easing the cough a bit when he had kennel cough! He didn't like it at first... but we mixed it with a tad of peanut butter and he licked it off a spoon that way! Hope he's feeling better soon! Sending healing vibes!

Thanks everyone...
we took him to the vet last night and he doesn't think it is kennel cough and it doesnt appear there is anything lodged in his throat. He suggested honey and cough syrup ( only if he really gets bad). So he had honey last night and some this afternoon and has been coughing alot less. Hubby said he hardly coughed all day and I have been home a couple hours and he hasn't coughed yet! I am so glad it wasn't kennel cough as we are going to stay at my parents for christmas with thier 2 dogs, my brothers dog, our dog and my parents 3 cats and 11 people(I love big family christmas).ITS GOING TO BE CRAZY!

This is was exact situation on Tuesday!!! When we got home from work, Crash was all excited as usual and he started coughing a little. It stopped within a few minutes. Then, that night he wasn't really coughing but hacking and gagging like he was trying to throw up. It lasted all night and morning neither one of us got any sleep. This really thick white foam would come up.

I called the vet at 6:30 when they opened and got him in right away. He did the same thing just a few times at the vets office.

SInce we left the vets office he hasn't coughed once. The Dr. said it was kennel cough without even hearing him cough. I told him he hasn't been near any dogs in over two weeks. Do you think he could have swallowed something?? I thought you had to diagnose something with evidence???

He is eating normal, but drinking ALOT, ALOT of water.....he normally doesn't drink this much water.

Any input would be appreciated!!!! Thanks

our vet did here him cough and listened to his chest, he also squeezed his throat and stuck his hand in there, He said usually if they have swallowed something the slightest pressure on the trachia will cause them to yelp. He said he probably has an inflamed throat something has irritated it or its just a virus like I said honey and cough syrup if it was really disrupting him. He has been fine all day today so fingers crossed it was just a sore throat.
