Hi, we're new here. My poor baby Hansel, who will be 2 next week, has had bloody diahhrea and has been losing weight for the past two months. We've had alot of tests, and the vet "thinks" it's ulcerative colitis, tho' we haven't had an endoscopy yet. We just started Flagyl and Baytril yesterday, and I was wondering if anyone had any luck with those medications ? We've already tried other antibiotics, with no real luck. My other question is that the Flagyl says it "may cause drowsiness" and has anyone seen this happen ? Hansel's been pretty lethargic today, but I'm not sure how much is his normal rhythm and/or how much is my hysteria over his condition ;). At least he ate a can of food this morning, which is better than yesterday !

If it's colitis, you might consider a change in food type. That is, don't feed kibble or anything else with a high grain or other carbohydrate content. Colitis is something boxers are rather prone to - but for a great many, getting rid of the processed food diets and feeding something natural such as a raw diet really is the magic bullet (and there are few magic bullet solutions in health issues). Perhaps something to consider, anyway.

We took this advice when Grumpy had chronic diarrhea and the raw food has worked wonders for her. For almost a year now Grumpy has been on either raw or homecooked food, and the problem has not come back. I think some dogs just don't tolerate kibble well - it's very hard for any dog to digest, and some just can't do it. Before switching to raw, we tried flagyl and a half dozen other meds, none of which helped at all. I hope you have better luck with the pills :) but if they don't do the trick, don't give up hope... changing diets can work wonders.
Good luck - we are sending lots of good vibes to you and Hansel.

We had trouble with our boxer's digestive system as well until recently. Now he hasn't had an episode of colitis in quite a few months. In addition his pancreitis hasn't acted up, which is huge!

He gets no grains at all and homecooked (he wouldn't even consider raw) with meat and vegetables only. It worked wonders.

I doubt the Flagyl will bother him, he may just not feel great if his tummy is off. Colitis can be very uncomfortalbe for a dog. I agree that a change in diet, more than anything, will probably help the most. Did they suggest smaller, more frequent meals? Best of luck to you and pup

We are having the same issues with Splash. He started having bloody stool back in October when we switched his food. We switched again and he seemed ok, and then this morning he had a small amount of blood again. So I am going to try homecooking and see how it goes. He loves chicken and rice and loves marrow bones. He is also a big veggie eater too. I wish you luck, and will keep you posted on our progress.
