I finally found a trainier and she suggested we use the choke collar for Ariels pulling and just plain out of control when we go for walks, and it worked wonders, but i just dont like the choke collar and the affects it will have on her neck. Then another trainier suggested that i use the prong collar instead, and just dont like the looks of it, and i have no experince with either and i was just wondering if anyone has any suggestions on those collars or anything else i can use.

Chuck both collars in the bin, and the so-called "trainer" right in there with them. Seriously, you need a better trainer. One that believes in actual teaching of what you want the dog to do, not just adversives to try to stop it doing what you don't want until finally there's nothing left but the desired behaviour.

Discussion of devices like choke and prong collars is not allowed on this site. Per the site rules:
Topics and behaviour inappropriate on this site include:
- Discussion of deliberate use of devices or practices that cause or have the potential to cause physical trauma to a dog. Boxerworld does recognise that people do have genuine questions regarding training tools (choke chains, prong collars, mousetraps etc) and methods, but we support and promote wholeheartedly positive training and behaviour management, that is, teaching the dog what to do by using positive methods, not teaching a dog what not to do by causing it discomfort and pain. Any threads which appear to promote "negative" training and methods will be closed.

Thank you so much for the advice. When the trainier was telling me about is i was just out raged with her methods of training. i know there is a way to train her to stop pulling and to stop trying to eat people walking down the street, i just wish i had some help!!

I completely agree with gmamcleod. Our trainer will not allow the use of choke or prong collars in our classes and highly discourages them outside the classs. If pulling is a constant problem and you have done all the correct teaching on how to walk with a loose leash, have you considered a Halti and Gentle Leader instead of the options your "trainer" has suggested? I 2nd what gmamcleod says and think you should find yourself another trainer who uses positive re-enforcement.

Im glad that i was right about this trainier, i knew as soon as she pulled out that choke collar, i knew that I was not going to like this! i am having a really hard time walking Ariel and she acts totally crazy. i have tried to head collar from GL and the harness, neither one seemed to stop her from pulling and i did not have control of her, maybe i was doing something wrong. i need to find a trainier that will agree with positive re-enforcment, but so far no luck. Is there some where i can look online to find one in my area?

Thanks again to ya'll for helping me with this!

Any sort of device - be it a choker or a head halter - really is just a crutch. That is, something that prevents or limits the ability of the dog to do something that you don't like. Of the two, the head halter is far preferable - at least it doesn't, by it's design and intent, cause pain and damage to the dog.

But if you use something like that, you do need to be aware that a crutch is all it is. It limits the dog's ability to pull - but it does NOT teach them not to try to pull, nor does it actually teach them to walk nicely. In short, the time still needs to be spent on actual training ;) There are no shortcuts, and dogs aren't good at guessing what it is we want from them. All devices like that can do is give you a little bit of a break whilst you do the teaching.

If you want to look online to find a trainer, this link would be a good start, http://www.apdt.com/. Good luck and I am glad your baby will be getting postivie reinforcement training now. I think it will be better for you and her as I think this type of training really strengthens the bond between you and your pup.
