Sorry for the lenght of this. My 5 year old girl Skye was diagnosed with BCM 2 1/2 years ago and has responded well to the drugs she has been on (Sotalol and Fortekor) but was holtered in September and the results weren't so good. She was holtered again last week and the results are even worse, plus she collapsed for the first time on Thursday evening. Have spoken to the cardiologist this morning and she is suggesting changing the drogs that Skye is on, or possibly increasing her Soltalol (pending results of a ECG which she's hoping to do tomorrow). The alternative drugs for consideration are Mexiletene, Amiodarone and Atenalol and I was wondering if anyone has experience of these as the cardiologist has said they can have some nasty side effects? Skye has also been on Omega 3, 6 and 9 supplements for about a month (cardiologist's suggestion) but these seem to have made no impression on Skye's arrhythmia. One potential cause of the increased arrhythmia (and I'm hoping this is the cause) is that she has a possible cruciate ligament problem which would cause her to release increaed levels of adrenalin to combat the pain and this realistically could be affecting her heart rhythm. She is on a complete break from exercise for 4 weeks now so hopefully we may see a change in her condition then.

I also have another old boy, Pero, a rescue who is today having an MRI scan. He's been diagnosed with BCM as well but has had two further collapses since we started him on medication. Today's scan is to see if there is a tumour on his brain which might be causing the collapses :-( My biggest worry today is that he's at increased risk from the anaesthetic because of the BCM. Fingers crossed...

So sorry for all your troubles :( My boy has been on Atenalol for some years now and has suffered no ill effects. He is also on Procaidimde, an old but effective drug for him. I have heard of some pups having trouble with Sotalol.
I know of a drug called pimobendan that has been successful in treating DCM, though it is somewhat controversial. May want to ask your vet about it. I will keep paws crosed for your Pero and hope things get better for you all soon. God Bless

Thanks

for the advice. Skye has gone in to see the cardiologist this morning to get a new ECG done before we decide on what to do with the drug therapy so I'll discuss these 2 drugs with the cardiologist when I see her later. Prepared to try anything that will help Skye.

Good news on Pero. My boy made it through the anaesthetic fine and the good news is that he doesn't have a brain tumour! He does however have middle ear disease which accounts for the head tilt that he has had since I've had him. Looks like the charity rescue centre I got him from didn't pick that one up. Given his age and his heart condition we are probably going to leave well alone though as it doesn't seem to bother him at all and it's apparently not a progressive condition. It was so good to have him home again last night:)
