DH got his orders and later in the year we're heading for Ft.Drum New York. Anyone else here live in that area? How do you keep your boxer entertained in the winter with all that snow? Magoo is strictly a beach baby, how is he going to handle the cold? I see some muttlucks in his future.

FYI. We live in Montana (tons of snow and 8 month winters) and Buster loves the snow. I have always read that Boxers don't like the extremities. The only evidence I have ever seen w/ Buster is heat in the summer. He has a jacket and booties and he has been on walks in temperatures well below zero. He loves it. I can't speak for the whole breed, but Buster prefers winter to all other months and loves tromping around in the snow. He could even do it without the jacket and booties if he had to. If you plan on getting him lots of excersise in the snow, booties are a good idea because their paws can be sensitive. Even huskies up here get them if there is skiing/sledding involved. Wouldn't worry about them, it is you that will have to get used to the idea that cold/snow doesn't mean indoors all the time. I'd say get some Xcountry skis and head for the local public golf course every weekend. good luck

"Muttlucks"....that's very cute!

Our beach baby Jazz came from a rescue in California and saw snow for the very first time last winter...she was scared to touch it at first, but was soon bouncing all over in the powder having a blast with the kids! We have a fleece coat (like a mini horse blanket) that Jazz wears when it's really cold here, though I think she'd rather not wear it...she even walks funny in the coat.

Rain is another story: she still hates to be in the rain for more than a minute.

I'm sure Magoo will be up for the adventure and just want to be wherever you guys are. Have fun!

Our summers are really hot and winters are really cold. We experience the beauties of each season actually. And Krose is loving every one of them!!! :D

I don't think you'll have a problem;) As long as they're with you, they don't care about the weather.

I live about an hour south of Ft. Drum and I HATE snow. We live in the "snow belt" where we get lake effect snow off Lake Ontario, last year we get 4 feet in 1 day. Luckily that doesn't happen very often. Ginger tolerates the snow but she isn't out very much when it gets really cold (below zero), just potty quickly and back inside. She gets most of her exercise then inside chasing and wrestling with our other dog and playing with the kids. Good luck to you and hopefully you will like snow (alot of people around here do) But for me I can't wait til spring!

Unfortunatley I'm not a huge fan of snow I like the kind that lasts for a few days so you can play in it and then disappears till next year. I don't enjoy the kind of snow you have to dig your car out of daily or shovel off your sidewalk. Oh well.

If you plan on getting him lots of excersise in the snow, booties are a good idea because their paws can be sensitive.

I'm sure we will be taking him out in the snow quite a bit if he will tolerate it. We normally go for daily walks and then on a weekend outing to walk trails or the beach . I guess the beach will be out from now on though.

Unfortunatley we don't have another dog for Magoo to play with, but we'd like to get another boxer when we're settled in and can fence the yard. Right now he gets all his exercise outdoors walking, and playing fetch etc..

I'm sure he will put up with the snow as long as he is with us. I had a huskie growing up snow was not a problem for him he loved to walk in it. How do you exercise your boxers in the winter, do you still walk them everyday?

Nestle loves the snow. Last winter the neighborhood kids made and obstical course for Nestle in the snow and an igloo for her... whe went totally insane and loved it. She was prancing over little snow mountains.

I love the snow as long as my hubby shovels. We are on the island so we don't get nearly as much as upstate. I would get Magoo some booties and a couple of pairs for yourself too, oh, and a nice shovel for hubby. haha.

Good luck

don't eat yellow snow

Hi. We just moved from the snow and let me tell you, when Coby seen a snow for the first time he was totally freaked out. He refused to go out and it took a lot of toys/treats and family outings for him to get used to. He did much better following winter, and now he is totally frustrated on the beach, trying to drink the ocean, as he got used to lakes and eat the sand, as he was eating the snow. Just teach Magoo not to eat yellow snow. You'll have so much fun with him you'll see.
How are you going to transport him? Let us know.

Kai loves the snow! We live in Ontario, Canada and as soon as December hits the snow starts. This is his 1st winter since he was born in September
and the hubby and I also weren't sure how he'd like it but luckily he loves it.
And yes we still walk him most every night. The only times we don't is when the wind chill factor makes it really freezing then as mentioned above he also gets his exercise inside chasing the kids around!
Also we don't put any boots or coats on him he won't have it but make sure to wash their paws after walks since the salt on the sidewalks/streets does
burn their paws.
