Bump on back leg

My 2 1/2 year old boxer, Lily, has a lump on her hind left leg. We took her to the vet a week ago, and they aspirated it, but said that they weren't sure if it was a mast cell, or if it was an infection. She said she knows it's not a fatty tumor. They gave me 10 days worth of Cephalexin 500mg which we are giving her twice daily. It appears to have gone down a little bit, but is still there. If it is still there by next Tuesday (the day after she finishes her meds) I'm taking her back to possibly get it removed..The thought of anesthesia makes me nervous, but it seems like it would be necessary if they can't tell me if it's cancerous by the aspiration. Just wondering if it was in fact an infection wouldn't it have cleared up by now? My two boxers love to do the back leg nipping thing when they play, and it's in the exact location where Bob usually nips at her so that's why I thought it might have been an infection..We've been watching them and making sure that they don't play rough, but they still do sometimes before we can stop them..Just wondered if anyone has had a similar situation. We lost our white boxer, Freddy, about two years ago to Lymphoma, and I'm hoping it's not cancer, but if it is we'll do whatever we need to do.

Hi,

My 3 year old boxer is having the same problem... but he has these bumps on lip, 2 front legs and one back leg. Last week they did a biopsy and we're waiting for results (hopefully today). Our vet also said it could be an infection and Chevy was aslo prescribed cephalexin. Good Luck and please keep me posted how Lily is doing.

Hope everything goes well with the biopsy. Lily's bump has gone down a little, but is still there, so I guess I'm taking her tomorrow for them to remove it and biopsy it. Did your vet remove the bumps or just aspirate it and send cells off?

The vet just aspirated and sent the cells off... I should of asked why he didn't remove them because before both of my boxers had lumps and the vet removed them and then sent it to the lab...

I called the vet yesterday and they haven't received the results yet.

Good luck

I guess it just depends on the vet..actually most of the situations I read about they just send the cells like your vet is doing, so I was just wondering why mine wanted to remove it without sending the cells first. Just a few minutes ago the vet called and said she's waking up fine and that he removed it all, and he's sending it for results..He said it didn't look like a mast cell tumor, but he's sending it either way..

I'm glad he's waking up and the vet thinks it's ok... hopefully the results will come in fine. I'm still waiting for my results.

I think they remove the lumps right away so they don't have to put the dog under again if it has to be removed. My vet said that with boxers he likes to remove every bump just to be safe.

Finally we got a call from the vet yesterday and Chevy has ringworms. It's easily treated but it is highly contageous so the lump on our other boxer's head is most likely that as well. So instead of him getting it removed this week the vet will do a scraping to make sure that's what it is and treat him for it. One problem is that we have a 6 month old daughter and it's contageous to people as well. Supposedly if we were to get it we would have symptoms already. The vet gave us alot of information and I'm going to search here as well.

Give a kiss to Lily for me and I hope the results will be fine.

I'm glad it's not something more serious, even if it will be a little bit annoying to deal with. Thanks for the support with Lily. The way she's acting today, you would never know she had surgery yesterday. It's a full time job keeping her quiet and calm!

Turns out it's a stage one MCT. The vet says it was all removed and that it had clean margins. We have to go back to get the stitches out next week, so I guess I'll just have to be really watchful for future lumps and bumps.
