I will not give Lulu rawhide after reading all the info on this site. Please tell me about bully sticks. Are they safe and what should I look for when purchasing..She really needs something to chew on.. I tried the nylanbone and she turned her nose up at it...thanks

I give my dogs bully stix. You have to be careful because some of them are prone to bacteria. Buy the free-range bully stix and make sure they are unbleached. You can find them online. The difference between free-range and ordinary is the smell! Free-range don't smell bad, the ones you buy in the grocery stores stink horribly! My dogs love them and I've never had any problems with them. Just make sure you buy quality bully stix. You can also order in bulk which is cheaper. :)

I get mine from sitstay.com - you can buy in bulk and they are all natural. They also have some other natural chews like dried beef gullet that are great for your dogs.

Thanks for the suggestions..I see that some are smoked. Should I stay clear of those..So, I am assuming that they do not cause a choking hazard like rawhide, is that correct?

Dogs can choke on anything. But, yes, these are safer than rawhides and great chewing tools. I have never had either one of my dogs choke. They are digestable. I personally don't know if I have seen the smoked. Maybe they are all smoked, I don't know. Just try to make sure you find some that are odor free. I mean they really stink if you buy the wrong ones!

I have started getting the Bullysticks from the petstore, I think they are around 12" long. (Could be wrong) The dogs breath do stink after chewing on them for a while, not too bad though. So am I getting the wrong bullysticks????

I didn't see any other types of bullysticks there. Just really...really long ones and braided ones. What do the "free-range" ones look like, any different? These bully sticks are not wrapped, just a sticker around it with the price. I think they are about $9.00 each

Thanks for all the responses..I found bully sticks on the internet for 1.40 each. They are supposed to be all natural..I just talked to a dog trainer that uses them, but she warns that they are not totally safe either..She sez rawhide is bad except for the pressed rawhide. The pressed rawhide has been broken down to little pieces then pressed back together so no choking issues..They chew thru them very quickly though. Has anyone tried them??

The ones that smell really bad you usually get in the grocery store. The free-range ones look the same, but it is the diet of the cattle that makes the difference. Free-range are "odorless" (they may still have a bit of odor after being chewed on but nothing compared to some of them). You can buy a pack of 25 12" chews online for $42 or so, which is less than $2.00 a piece compared to your $9.00 individuals. A couple of places online to buy are bestbullysticks.com or digitpet.com (I think I ordered my last ones from digitpet.com), or just type in free range bully sticks in your search bar and you can find many places to order them. Just make sure they say free range and odorless in the description. :)

Yes, I have bought pressed rawhide also. It is true they are safer because they are broken down and pressed back together. I will buy some occasionally, but I prefer the bully sticks myself. ;) Nothing is 100% safe and as said before, I've never had either one of my dogs choke on a bully stick.
