Bug bites into scabs?

Hi everyone. I'm sorry if this is going to be gross, but bear with me, this is the first time I've ever seen this.

Behind my pups ears are maybe like 15 tiny scabs, as if they were bug bites at one point, he maybe scratched them to the point of bleeding and then they formed scabs. He keeps on scratching them, the scabs come off and they bleed, starting the whole process over again.

I have two questions:

1) Are these bug bites that he's just scratching because they are itchy?
2) I called my vet and asked them if I could put Neosporin on them and they said yes. Now, does this mean I have to remove all the scabs so the Neosporin actually makes contact, or will the stuff works its magic through the scabs?

Sorry so gross, but thought maybe someone here could shed some light on this situation.

Thanks.

That sounds like a red flag for scabies and/or mange. I think you should let the vet see the dog and maybe take a scraping.

I would agree. I would get your vet to check it out.

I would have them checked out. There are probably several things it could be. Most skins problems can be taken care of if caught early on.

Remy has had "black stuff" on the outer edge of his ear (he has cropped ears). It almost looked like caked on dirt. When rubbed, it would bleed. It was scabs.

I've taken him in to the vet and it turned out to be an infection. He was put on antibiotics and a topical cream.

Thanks everyone for your replies. Without them, we would have gone on thinking they were bug bites.

By the time our appointment rolled around, they had spread to around his ears, underneath his neck and chin as well as the top of his head.

Our vet did a skin scraping, and came back thinking it was just a bacterial infection of the skin, but still could possibly be mange later on. I guess it is really hard to tell with skin disorders. He's on antibiotics now and if it doesn't get any better we are going to treat him for scarcoptic (sp?) mange.

Thanks again for your advice, I know where I can always turn!!!

I'm so glad you took him in. But, I'm REALLY MAD

that your vet's office did not urge you to bring him in with your original call!!

Let us know what the outcome is. Scarcoptic (sp?) is not un-common in young Boxers.
