Hello everyone .. not sure if this is the right forum for this, if it's not, i appologize ...

My wife came home talking about how we are now able to get boxer sperm, instead of just breeding my baby, Jaden with a male.
What is everyone's thought on this issue ? Is it safe ? What should I look out for ? Where can I find some and how do I know if it's worth it ?
This is all new to me.
Jaden is 2.5 yrs old now and will be having her 3rd heat soon. The problem I seem to be having is that she was the runt of the litter, and every beautiful male boxer i find for her is too big. She's only 45 lbs.
Can someone here maybe shed some light of the size issue here for me please ? I would hate for my Jaden to die while giving birth because the dog we bred her with was to big.

So, what's better or safer ?

Thanks so much.

p.s.: As you can probably tell, this is all new to me. I have never bread a dog. This would be our 1st time. We love our dog so much, we would like to have more of her around.

You'll want to use the search forum for breeding. Just a bit of advice, though.
The issue of breeding is a VERY sensitive topic here at BW. You will no doubt get opinions you may not like, so please be sure to do all the research that you can first before even considering to breed. My Cissy is only 40-45 pounds, and even though she is spayed-for her future health and well being- I would never consider breeding her.Good luck.

Just because you love your dog and would love to have more of her around is certainly no reason to breed her! Breeding a dog is a very detailed procedure and should be left up to the professionals who devote their life to the betterment of a breed. Have you had health tests done on her yet? Do you have a mentor who you've watched and can learn things from? I too love my dog but would never add to the amount of puppies in the world, when there are just so many homeless ones available. Please consider how serious this is and not just think about the fact that you want puppies to have more of your baby around.

If you love your dog, you should do what is best for her health and have her spayed. That is what is both better and safer for her. Intact females and those that have litters have a far higher chance of developing several types of cancer (which boxers are rather prone to) than spayed females do. And that's without even counting the risks associated with pregnancy, whelping and raising a litter.

If you want another dog just like her - no need to use your dog as a breeding machine, get a sibling or other close relative. You have a far better chance of getting another 'just like her' that way, and you won't be risking her health and wellbeing to achieve it.

PS: Information on the health testing that *needs* to be done on any boxer prior to breeding can be found here: http://www.boxerworld.com/breeders
Information on backyard breeding (which is what I think you're proposing) and the damage it does to the breed can be found in the links from this page:http://www.boxerworld.com/rescue

Please, Please, Please dont breed your dog! For her own health sake, and for the sake of all the other homeless puppies out there who need to be put down for lake of loving homes everyday. y Not to mention that you would never forgive yourself if you lost your girl during birth!

I'm sorry, I know you're being sincere but I had to laugh a bit at this. I had visions of store freezer shelves lined with vials - "Boxer Sperm", "Beagle Sperm", "Rottweiler Sperm", etc. :)

The fact that you have asked this question, and the others in your post, tell me that you really don't know enough about breeding at this point to be doing it. Take some time and research, before you enter into something that might very well mean the death of your bitch.

As you can probably tell from the responses you've already gotten, breeding for the sake of having puppies is strongly frowned upon here. The rules that you agreed to follow when you requested membership to this forum specifically discuss which breeding practices are welcome and which are not - if you need a refresher, they can be found at www.boxerworld.com/rules/

I do ask you to not take the typical route and get offended because people are offering you advice you don't want to hear. Instead, listen to what they have to say, read the information they've offered, and ask yourself if you really are considering breeding with the best interests of your bitch, and the breed as a whole, in mind. Read some of the posts in the Health forum of the serious problems people have with their Boxers, and ask yourself if you would want to be the person who created those problems. Read the Rainbow Bridge posts and ask if you would want to be the responsible for those deaths. Read Sabine's story in the Choosing A Breeder forum, and ask youself if you're willing to take that risk with your bitch. There is a lifetime commitment that goes with having a litter of puppies, and it is not always joyous.

And to answer your original question - "buying sperm" is nothing new, and is not generally done to avoid a natural breeding, as natural breedings have a better conception rate, but is used when the stud dog is too far away from the bitch for a natural breeding to be accomplished. You don't "find some" sperm - you choose a male whose attributes best match your bitch and what she needs, and then if the stud owner accepts your bitch for breeding and geography is a problem, you have the sperm shipped. (Occasionally, if the stud dog is no longer living, of course artificial insemination is the only option.)

 is that something like "shake and bake"? (its BRED ;)) all nonsense aside.. this IS a very very important/touchy subject 'round these parts. Not because we like to be mean, or that we like to make others think we're mean.. but only because we care so very much about our breed. There are shelters/rescues literally overflowing w/ boxers that people don't want. Many times its because the dogs are sick, or they didn't do the appropriate research before getting into the breed. (who ever sold them the dog didn't do a good job screening the family.. a boxer is NOT for everyone. this is one of the biggest responsibilities/challenges a breeder has.. finding the perfect home)

Breeding is much more than having an intact female and finding some "boxer sperm". The only reason anyone should breed, novice or experienced, is to better the breed. (not because you want a clone of your dog, or your family wants a boxer, or your friend's second cousin has a male boxer, and you could make a quick buck selling the pups) If you are planning to breed, you should already have a vast amount of knowledge on the breed standard, what makes a good boxer. You should be involved in conformation showing your bitch (the male too), thats a great way to prove she is a great example of the breed. (or atleast have had her evaluated by many different experienced, reputable show breeders.. that way they can give you an honest oppinion on what her faults/strong points are, and you can find a male that will counter her faults). She should have had the proper health testing done (OFA certs for heart and hips, at a minimum, not just a brucellosis test at the vet), and same for the male. Also, having an experienced show boxer breeder as a mentor that will be there for you during all stages of the pregnancy is of utmost importance.. i couldn't imagine a newbie trying to do everything by themselves.

please use this forum to do as much research as possible. you have a great tool infront of you. use the SEARCH button to look up words like "responsible breeding" and "Backyard Breeders". and also read all the articles that everyone has already mentioned. good luck, i hope you understand where we are coming from.

Just to concur with what's been written above, and add a personal note.

Are you willing to trade her for some puppies? Because that might be the bargain you're making.

I lost my foundation bitch in a c-section. Loved her madly. Did all the health testing, picked a worthy, Champion, health tested sire with a temperament to die for, strong in the areas where she was weakest. Studied everything I could get my hands on, had mentors standing by to walk me through it.

And I lost her anyway. Instead of the lovely litter of adorable babies and a doting mama I had pictured, I had a couple thousand dollars in vet/autopsy/cremation bills, and nine orphan pups that needed to be handfed round the clock.

That wasn't a trade I had signed up for, but it was the one I ended up having made.

If you're not willing to live with that very possible consequence, don't do it. There are other reasons not to, but love for her is among the very worst, because it's something you're putting in danger by going ahead with breeding.

Good Grief...

I can't add much more to this awful post, but I will anyway..

The SOLE purpose to breed (according to the AKC and ABC Code of Ethics) is to improve the breed standard.

How would you go about this?

The only way you can have your dog evaluated (to see if she meets the breed standard) is to show her, or have her professionally evaluated by an experienced mentor.

Then discover her faults, and search for a male that offsets her faults.

Have your female properly health tested (OFA Hips, Heart, thyroid, etc..) and make sure the male has been health tested as well. This has nothing to do with a "vet check", btw...

I'm guessing you haven't even taken any of these steps. From the sound of it, your female doesn't seem too close to the breed standard.

Please spay your dog ASAP. We all love our dogs and think they are the most beautiful Boxers on the planet. But that in itself is a stupid reason to breed. If you really loved the Boxer Breed, you would ONLY breed when it has been proven that you are BETTERING the breed. As of now, all you are doing is over-populating and stressing our shelters and rescues
